Places That Will Make You Fall in Love With Lorne
The town of Lorne is more than just a pitstop when driving Australia's Great Ocean Road. It’s a destination in its own right, full of waterfalls, scenic hiking trails, and powdery beaches to explore. Here are a few of my favorite things to see and do while there.
Ting, Singapore, Singapore
- Teddy's Lookout687This is the perfect place to up your insta game, so make sure to have your camera ready. The vistas of the coastline and surrounding bushland are unforgettable.
- Cora Lynn Cascades Walk24It takes two hours by foot to reach Cora Lynn Cascades, but the views at the end are worth the effort. Tip: The trail is flanked by gorgeous fern and gum trees but can get quite muddy, so make sure to wear the right gear.
- Lorne Beach471Just off Great Ocean Road, the one-mile long Lorne Beach is the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon. Stretch out on the sand with a good book, explore the small rock pools or go for a dip—it’s a great place for swimmers because the incoming waves are shielded by Point Grey.
- Erskine Falls1,149Erskine Falls is a popular landmark in Lorne where you can admire the cascading waters from any of the two lookout points. If you are up for more adventure, venture further on the trail to find Straw Falls and Splitter Falls.
- Sheoak Falls84A 10-min walk past massive gum trees and tree ferns takes you to Sheoak Falls, a 50 foot tall waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation that tumbles into a plunge pool (you can go for a swim but it’s a pretty small area). If you continue to walk north, you'll reach Swallows Cave, where swallows come to nest during spring.
- Lower and Upper Kalimna Falls27This is a fun circuit to hike because to reach the Upper Falls you travel through a cave behind the lower falls. It’s definitely a unique experience.
- Lorne Swing Bridge33There’s something exciting and slightly terrifying about a pedestrian bridge that sways from side to side. Lorne Swing Bridge was first built in 1934 and restored 4 years ago. It takes you from the Great Ocean Road to Lorne Beach, crossing the narrow Erskine River. Don’t miss lunch at the Swing Bridge café and Boathouse after your walk over.
- Phantom Falls7When it comes to Lorne’s many waterfalls, Phantom Falls is often overlooked but you’d be remiss not to add it to your bucket list. The hike there is gorgeous, with lots of flora and fauna to marvel at, and the waterfall itself is stunning.
- Henderson Falls20For adventure seekers looking for a more rigorous hike than Phantom falls, Henderson Falls is two miles further southwest in the same circuit trail.
- The Lorne Pier60If you’re looking for breathtaking ocean views, Lorne Pier offers them in spades, especially at sunset. The 10-year-old pier is also an ideal spot to fish for squid and salmon, and spot seals and whales off the shore.
