We stayed here for one night with 2 adults and 3 teenagers. We used the mastersuite, which was large, with 2 king size beds that could probably be occupied by 3 people. The building creaked quite a bit in the wind, but view is great.

When we arrived we were given a special "explanation" of the restaurant, which was basically a hard sell. We had lunch, but it was mediocre, and expensive. Ditto for breakfast.

This was a good place to stay, located within walking distance of several really good restaurants. A helpful staff, good view, good on-site restaurant, good clean rooms (if your room up the hill wear your climbing gear or be prepared to ask at the desk for a ride). The hot tubs work, you have to ask the staff to prepare one 2-hours before wanting to use it, they will fill it and heat it.

I wondered about staying here after reading the reviews. I was more than pleasantly pleased. Even the hike up the stairs after a day of hiking in the woods was not bad. You stopped and looked at the birds, insects and nature all around you. the bathroom shower door (yes they have shower doors) were beautiful. No air conditioning was needed. I liked the idea of an eco friendly hotel without tv's as I was here for the nature. I could go into the lobby if I needed a tv fix. Sophia restaurant- fine dining was just a 2 min walk away with great latin cuisine. I shall be back to Heliconia Hotel on my next trip to Monte Verde.

Have just returned from a Costa Rica trip and spent 2 of the 10 nights here.I was VERY wary after reading the reviews but I needn't have worried. We stayed in a delux room.Yes, there is a walk to the rooms but you can phone for the van to fetch you.The room was very clean, had 2 king size double beds, a large bathroom with soap & shampoo.Breakfast was up to the same standard as everywhere else we stayed.Didn't try the evening meal but there's a great coffee/ snack place just opposite where you can read magazines, swop books and have a very tasty quesedilla with chicken. If we'd discoverd it the first day, we'd have eaten there twice.menu changes and is simple but very reasonable.Front of desk at hotel very helpful but don't bother to book trips there-cheaper to walk down the road and book them in the tourist place. It is breezy there -no heating in the rooms either but we weren't cold, but this is monteverde cloud forest, so expect it to be cooler and wetter.Enjoy the hotel and don't worry. You won't spend that much time there anyway.20minute walk to the left (big hike uphill) leads to St Elena.Need a taxi/car to get to monteverde rain forest.Guides there are terrific-don't try and do it without one.Frog house display-20min walk away -down hill 7 through commercial centre, then right for 5 mins.-on the left.Well worth a visit -you don't see the variety of frogs elsewhere & you're guided around but can return by yourself within the day with the same ticket.

We stayed in a family suite for 2 nights and the room appeared quaint at first glace but you quickly realize it is just rough all the way around. The faucet in the bathroom was so loose you had to hold the base to turn the water on. The toilet seat was also loose and the shower drained so slowly you were standing in 3 inches of water. There was a huge gap at the bottom of the double entry doors and between them near the floor. There was a spider web under the stairs at head height near the entrance to the bathroom and the sheets and blankets were old (maybe dirty also - it was hard to tell). No clock, no coffee, no internet. Our room did have plenty of bugs though; not just from the front door but a few of the window slats didn't close completely. The first night there was one half-inch spider in the bathroom. The second night there were two spiders on the bathroom floor-I thought about leaving them in there to keep the other bug population down. We didn't have a car so we made the hike up the steep incline often not only to explore but to spend as little time as possible in the room. Our room showed a complete lack of maintenance.
