For this Norteamericano, air conditioning is important and Heliconia doesn't have it.
Despite cool temps, the room was close and warm at night. On the plus side, on the 500 level, the morning rainbow and the view of the Pacific and the Nicoya peninsula were cool. The free breakfast was free because they would be embarrassed to charge for it. The hotel staff was cool and distant and refused to provide ice. A big plus: Don Luis, a "pizzaria" across the street, had a great wine list and a terrific menu that went well beyond pizza. We ate there twice.
Stay at Heliconia again? It would depend on the weather and the alternatives, but Don Luis is a definite return.

Room Tip: 500 level has great views

No end of steps to climb to most rooms. Horrible when it rained and at night in the dark. Suitcases have to be carried up (by the guest) and down again. Breakfast was unimaginably bad. Our room was freezing as were the beds. On stripping our bed back on the day of our departure we noticed the mattress was VERY badly stained. Not nice. Find somewhere else if you can.

Room Tip: Check the beds

This hotel is okay but lacking in Customer Service. No refrigerators in the rooms and I thought I was going to have to produce a credit card to get a small bowl of ice. The staff seem inattentive and you almost had to interrupt them to get their attention. Breakfast Buffet was adequate but was not replenished on a very frequent basis. Our room was in the 200 level and it was a hike to get back and forth. Our room also had a bit of a musty smell and the bathroom window did not close completely which led to a howling noise all night as it was very windy all three days we were there.

Room Tip: If you do not like walking uphill, ask for a room on lower level

Breakfast is appalling. Minimal choice, small quantities of each choice and re-stocked too slowly. Coffee and "hot" water for tea were both cold.
Shuttle bus up to rooms at higher levels is scheduled to run up to 10:00 at night but stopped earlier than this. We had to walk up in the dark as a result. Staff were rude about the request for the bus.
Rooms are just OK but odd - no shelf for soaps etc in bathroom and shower is poor.
Try to avoid staying here.

Room Tip: Stay at another hotel

Just back from a trip to Costa Rica. After reading previous reviews our group were nervous about staying at this hotel. The rooms were perfectly clean and spacious, the beds were deep and amazingly comfortable.

Yes you have to walk up a number of steps to get to the cabin. But you are staying in the mountains so what does one really expect?!! Our bus was able to take us to our cabin so we could get our luggage directly out of the bus, it was able to drive up again on our last day to put the luggage directly in the bus again

Breakfast was of the same quality as the four other hotels that we stayed in around the western side of Costa Rica. There is a good restaurant and supermarket directly opposite. I truly do not understand the previous poor reviews
