“Irony Sichuan Style”
Reviewed 6 May 2012

Dainty Sichuan kicked off small about 9 years ago, in an entirely different suburb - Collingwood - it soon moved to Melbourne CBD and started gathering a following of hot-fanatics. So Dainty Sichuan has history, that has to tick a couple of boxes right off.

The ambience is anything but ambient, the place is and always has been loud, a clattering, ear ringing cacophony blended unsubtly with movement and smell.

The - heat - rating system says it all, single, double or triple chilli, the food is flavour filled, the menu is not shy either, 50+ items allows for a different dish each visit.

Overall the atmosphere is brilliant, very diverse. The food goes from being hot all the way to blisteringly hot. Portions are ample.

Prices are reasonable, $8 - $30 per dish, we walked away with a $140 bill for 4 people.

The lunch menu is a bargain, a huge selection of dishes under $10.

“Go the soy milk..”
Reviewed 5 April 2012

Wow. Our friend from China told us this was the best place to eat in Melbourne so she picked our food for us. She hadn't told us about the wonders of soy milk and my partner ordered it just so we could fit in with the bet crowded restaurant. But when the food came out it was fiery and so tasty and definitely the most memorable meal we had in a while. However the soy is what makes the fire taste so good. Never knew that before....

“Amazingly good Sichuan food!”
Reviewed 11 December 2011

We heard about Dainty Sichuan from Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations Melbourne show and had been dying to try it out ever since we watched the episode. It took a bit of searching to discover that this place had moved from its original location in the CBD to Toorak Road in South Yarra. We went for an early dinner on a Saturday night, and the place was nearly full at 6:30pm. Luckily we had a reservation, and were seated immediately. We thought it was a good sign that the restaurant was packed with people who looked and sounded Chinese. Although there were only two of us, we ordered 4 dishes to get a variety of veggie and meat dishes, and were blown away by how good every single dish was. This is the sort of place that whatever you order will come out of the kitchen as soon as it's ready, so our first dish arrived at our table barely 5 minutes after placing our order, while our last dish took about 30-40 minutes. But everything was fantastic - hot, flavorful, and each had a unique taste to it. Our favorite dish was definitely the "fish flavored eggplant" which we would probably order again every single time we go back. It's sweet, crispy, hot, soft on the inside, and absolutely amazing. One of the great things about his place is that you can get take-away containers and pack up all your leftovers to take home. There was a line out the door as we were leaving around 8pm, so I would recommend making a reservation if you're going on a busy night. Be prepared for serious doses of chilli and sichuan flower pepper, so this would not be a good place for those of you who can't handle the heat. But if you're looking for some authentic, mind blowing Sichuan, this is the place for you!
