Review of Magic Table

Magic Table
Ranked #1 of 1 Restaurants in Giraudel
Price range: USD 50 - USD 60
Description: Called an "underground of fine dining" "supper clubs" or "closed-door restaurants", the phenomenon of dining directly in chef's house gets increasingly popular. And this is what we are. We serve upscale world-fusion dishes with strong influence of Mediterranean, Indian, and European styles. Delicious, hard to get food await you on Magic Table. Rare artifacts and hand made Oriental furniture collected during our travels add to the unique ambiance. This is not your typical restaurant experience. Not only a feast to remember, but also full privacy assured. We specialize in seafood and fine vegetarian dishes. Please visit our site and see what's on our menu and find out more about us. We look forward to seeing you soon! (But remember, you need to call in advance and book your Magic Table!)

This time we booked a custom built evening for 8 . We sprang it on Derek and Margaret that it was my husband's birthday and they opened on a tuesday and produced a candle in a cheesy speciality bread. As usual the menu was a culinary education from all over the world. We were especially pleased to be able to buy two of Derek's remarkable photography books at discount prices. Looking forward to the next occasion when someone asks us where we would love to go for a memorable dinner.

On our recent trip to Dominica we had the opportunity to have multiple meals at the Magic Table, Derek and Margaret's place outside of Roseau, just down the road from the Redeemer's Retreat House, near Eggleston . It was absolutely marvelous: fine food mixed with good company!

The setting is the first thing you notice: as others have mentioned, a lovely old plantation house set at the end of a road in the rain forest. The house/restaurant is furnished with the hosts' extensive collection of Syrian furniture and art, the mix of local and exotic gives the place an unusual, and striking ambiance. You don't find this in Canada! But the best part was the food. Let us be honest, by and large Dominica's restaurant scene tends towards the plain and simple once you escape the fancy hotels (some exceptions, e.g., the Romance Cafe). The Magic Table is a refreshing exception, somehow combining an intimate, home like atmosphere with beautifully cooked high end food. This includes decent coffee (yay!), rum smoothies, and the best bread on the island.

The company is also very good: Margaret is well versed in the flowers and plants on the island, and both are knowledgeable about the Caribbean. Had numerous good conversations about life on Dominica!

Would highly recommend this place. You have to book ahead and i think there is a minimum number of people they need to open, but touch base with them as to details.

Dining at Magic Table Dominica is, well, MAGICAL! Situated in an old plantation house near the Village of Eggleston, Magic Table serves a fusion of international seafood and vegetarian dishes with noticeable influences of Europe, India and the Mediterranean Region, among others. The enchanting experience begins when you turn off the main Eggleston Road on to the winding path leading to the restaurant/residence, going past towering tropical trees, exotic flowers and a natural mineral spring from which the purest of the clean waters for which Dominica is known, flows. It continues as you enter the building adorned with rare artifacts and hand-made furniture collected from numerous places on planet earth. A favorite appetizer is fish pâté (smoked personally by the Chef), and a special (you guessed it) HOMEMADE, rye bread. Another favorite of mine is Eggplant Parmesan. The melt-in-your-mouth chocolate cake creates a real dilemma: It is so pleasing to my palate that at every visit (three so far) since my first dining experience at Magic Table, I have wanted nothing else for dessert - and I am missing out on having my palate tantalized by the other exotic desserts! Sigh............

We were so pleased to taste this experience at the Morne Guay Plantation House with Derek and Margaret. We were met with rum punches as a reward for finding the place through the bushes beyond the Retreat House.

The ambience is a bit like having dinner in a museum celebrating the hosts travels in the Middle East and beyond. The food was interesting and delicious and unlike anything you might be able to find anywhere else in Dominica.

I can only encourage you to try this custom built dinner...we went with two friends and felt like honoured guests. We just wished that they had had a guest room in the attic so everyone could indulge in the wines and wake up to see what Derek and Margaret would serve for breakfast.
