Our second experience of De Oude Herberg. A new top-class chef. The food was exquisitely flavoursome - thai prawns and a fillet steak that was melt in the mouth. Gentle ambience. Our host went out of his way and drove us back to our accommodation as we had (probably rather unwisely) walked quite a way into town. Faultless

Tulbagh itself was wonderful, filled with history, safe and fun. Children still playing skip-the-rope. Reminded me of the times when kids were still acting like kids and not pushed in front of the TV or PS. As far as De Oude Herberg B & B is concerned, they will never see me again. Bed and breakfast was included in our very expensive one night stop. We were asked what time we would like to have breakfast, we advised that we are traveling very far and would like to leave by 8am. The manager then quickly responded by saying they do not serve breakfast at all before 9am. I was shocked by this, as he did not even offer to arrange for anything earlier. Please keep in mind that this is a very expensive guest house, and it did not state that breakfast could not be served before 9am on the terms and conditions. If I knew all of this I would have rather booked myself and my family in at the Radisson Blu in Cape Town. The floors were dirty in the room itself. There was Port available on the nightstand of each room, but no effort was made to ensure that the glasses were cleaned, and there was still a thick line of red dried port wine in the bottom of the glass. The bathroom was also not properly cleaned, as there were human hair everywhere, and a very suspicious stain on the tile next to the loo. I was disgusted and massively disappointed. The best thing about my room is that it had Air-con! There is also no Room Service available, as we requested this but were advised that we need to be seated either outside on within the restaurant.

We just stayed for one night at De Oude Herberg to explore the town of Tulbagh and the area around it. The house is one of the houses fully restored after the earthquake of 1969 and is an absolute delight. Jan, the owner was charming and helpful and a great wine buff!
The poolside room was big and airy, tastefully and elegently furnished. We decided to stay for dinner and that was a great choice. the chef, Adrian has not been here for long but came from some of the top restaurants in Franschoek and the food was superb, washed down with Jan' s knowledgable wine suggestions.

Situated in a quiet street surrounded by beautiful old cape Dutch homesteads this bed and breakfast offered a relaxing and friendly atmosphere after a hot and dusty day. The evening meal was from a unique menu and was very tasty. There is interesting beer brewed closeby and this is served with an excellent choice of wines for those that enjoys wine. I can recommend this place for a stop to explore the beautiful mountains and valley.

The one star here goes to the restaurant decor, which we had plenty of time to admire after being completely ignored for 15 minutes after being seated.
While the wine list (which we eventually got given) is extensive and eclectic, neither the chef nor waitress could tell us anything about the wines and many were out of stock. After half an hour, with not so much as a glass of water, let alone wine, we decided to leave. Heaven knows how long the food would have taken to arrive! The couple at an adjacent table had not got one moment of attention while we were there, so service is less than attentive, to say the least.
We were extremely disappointed, as our usually spot-on B&B owners had recommended this place, as did staff at one of the local wineries. It seems that the owner was not present that night, which clearly made a massive difference. Service counts as much as food!
