“Soggy Pie & Mash, Pub and Beer too cold !”
Review of Ring O Bells

Ring O Bells

Owner description: Traditional country pub with a modern edge. Situated in the Chew Valley between Blagdon and Chew Valley Lakes. The pub has two en suite bedrooms, two original public bars with beams, traditional games and largest inglenook fireplace in the valley. The main dining room has reclaimed oak floorboards, open fire, interesting artwork and features on the walls and settles. The Ring O Bells serves simple but innovative dishes, a modern British menu using locally sourced seasonal produce.

Visited on Thursday lunchtime. Last time we tried to visit this pub it was closed for refurbishment. So our expectations were reasonably high.
The pub has had a makeover. It is transformed in the bar area with country sporting theme, but the menu we was shown was limited and basic pub grub, pie of the day, sausages, fish and chips, but no steaks.
Despite an open fire the pub is very cold. The two Real Ales on pump, are too cold and the food is basic home cooking served piled in the middle on large white plates to look like fine dining. Perhaps they can't decide what they want to be.
The food was ordered but despite the pub being very quiet, the food took ages! We were halfway through a second pint when it arrived.
The pie (which we was told would be Steak and Ale), arrived sitting on top of unremarkable mash (basic not creamy) on large white plates.
The contents of the pie was carved /sliced beef, very odd! (and chewy) (was this infact leftover meat from the carvery? ) with cabbage and instant gravy? The whole pie and plate was covered in what appeared to be some sort of instant gravy. (the latter quickly congealed in the coldness of the room). I do not understand why a chef would spend at least 40 mins baking a nice puff pastry crust to then cover it with instant gravy making it a soggy mess and serving it to their customers, and charging £12 for it. That’s not acceptable, we will not be returning.
The same gravy was on my partners sausages and mash, of a similar standard, presented in a similar manner. They was not impressed either. N.B. Wear something warm because you will get very cold waiting for your meal or just don't go there.

Hi RoamingTomCat

Thanks for your review, I am not sure why the pub was cold as all the radiators are on full blast and the two fires were lit.

I am sorry that we did not have on the menu the food that you would have liked to have seen, we have always done pie and mash, sausage and mash, fish and chips ect as they are pub classics that I am sure you will see on most pub menus. We are a pub that serves good food.

Our gravy is made fresh in house, we would never use instant gravy, sorry this was not to your liking.

Sorry you feel you won’t be returning

We have stayed at the pub previously, and visited again recently for food. The pub has a lovely village feel, and is welcoming to families and pets. The menu is reasonable and offers a variety of traditional dishes. The food itself was tasty and portions were good. The only criticism that we had was that it was very cold so we sat in our coats to eat!

Thank Julie N

Hi Julie N

Thank you for your review and glad you like us enough to come back again! Sorry about being cold, we have had some issues with the heating and a few fires being broken due to it catching fire... the heating is now sorted so when you come again you should be nice and toasty!

Well what a lovely place.

Food, beer, company, staff, room all really good.

I stay all over, this is right away in my personal top 5.

OK, they like dogs and I am cats, but the place is so good I can overlook this dreadful fail.
