Australian Galleries has been in the suburb for decades featuring so much remarkable art from around the country. Its a perfect place to spend an hour browsing contemporary Australian art. Exhibitions are held regularly and invariably superb.

The Australia Galleries are a commercial enterprise -- in other words, their paintings are for sale. Entry is gratis. Many well-known artists exhibit here. Paintings are worth what you pay for them, they may appreciate in price astronomically, but more likely they will not. You should purchase a painting because it gives you pleasure. If you make a profit, you should count yourself lucky. By buying a painting, you are helping an artist make a living.

An art gallery that has over 60 years in featuring regular exhibitions of contemporary Australia artists.

In April the exhibitions I saw were:
Graeme Drendal
&
Raymond Arnold

A good place to spend an hour wandering through both galleries and being absorbed into some truely amazing works.

Parking is street parking, which you need to be careful as some spots are permit zones (you don't want a fine!).

Any Tips or Tricks to be mentioned:
- be sure to read parking signs.

Most recently I was at Australian Galleries on a Sunday, late morning, for a William Robinson show. It was a large and delightful show of the artist's late-life works featuring still life paintings set in his home's interior and garden. The gallery felt well cared for and the help and information provided at the front desk was given in a friendly manner. The relevant books and bound catalogues offered for purchase are good quality. Catalogues are priced at $10-20.

The Australian Galleries are worth a detour. Their exhibitions are tops class. I especially liked Dale Cox's sheep with trees on top. The gallery is spacious and well lit. The Australian Galleries are certainly one of Melbourne's leading commercial galleries; in other words, their pictures are for sale.

So Many galleries for such a young city haha
We did every where from the major one near fed square to so many little boutique ones throughout

Ask in the first gallery you go to and they can point you in the right direction for the next one, its like a treasure hunt haha

Australian Galleries was founded in the 1950s by a couple called Purves. These days their son, Stuart Purves, oversees galleries in two states and Australian Galleries represents a long list of good Aussie artists. In Sydney Australian Galleries is in Paddington. In Melbourne you'll find the gallery in the inner suburb of Collingwood, at 35 Derby St, and the store rooms are at 28 Derby Street. Both are a short walk from Smith Street, so they can be reached by public transport and there's a choice of eateries and bars for after your visit. There's a brisk turnover in exhibitions, most one-person, so check Australian Galleries website or an arts almanac for what is currently on and what's forthcoming. You can also subscribe to a mailing list.
