Good value but slipping

Review of Savan Resorts
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 9 Dec 2012
I visited Savan Vegas Hotel / Casino in November 2012 and enough has changed since my last visit in January to warrant a fresh review. Rates are still the same - 1000 baht for card-holders - and double that otherwise. Internet rates are oddly still much higher.

Most annoyingly the service on arrival at reception has gone seriously downhill. I arrived with reservations for a party of six and paid cash up front for 3 rooms for 3 nights. Yet the people at reception who seem to take pleasure in antagonising people and wasting guests' time held me up for half an hour writing out breakfast coupons, and arguing over everything. First they wanted cash deposits (which Thai tour groups don't pay at all). Then they argued over the credit card offered, they wanted a different one. Then they demanded a 2 dollar cash fee to process the card for the deposit. At this point I demanded to speak with the Manager and Voila! No deposit required sir. Reminded me of Fawlty Towers!

The management seriously need to work on the behaviour of check in staff who dampen what is otherwise a nice hotel at a good price. Irritating your guests on arrival is a bad strategy.

Casino floor staff have improved - there is virtually no begging for tips which was rampant 8 months earlier. Rooms are still good value - lots of ciggie burns on the carpets and the shower dripped but otherwise everything worked and the beds are comfortable. Good range of toiletries and plenty of free water. It is obvious that rooms are gradually being run down by lack of maintenance but they are still excellent value for what is on offer.

Clearly there has been cost cutting at the breakfast buffett - where once there were a lot of staff evident they are now rare. Drinking water is tepid muck (yet on the gaming floor is iced and chrystal clear), food often ran out and was not replenished, the toaster did not work, things like yoghurt has gone from the menu and quality and service was appalling. Tables were piled high with mess and staff made no effort to clean up for arriving guests. Finding a teacup was a challenge and there was not a single knife anywhere for three days - rendering the packets of jam useless.

Bizarrely some money has indeed been spent on extending the airconditioned breakfast seat quite substantially - so there is a lot more seating. Maybe that explains the cost cuts on quality and service.

To the contrary, service levels on the casino floor are up - there are now a couple more noodle / sandwich carts, more iced water available and helpful, smiling faces everywhere. Apart from the smoky air, the casino is great, and the staff are a credit to the operation. I can only deduce that the casino is operated by a professional management and the hotel is not.

We arrived via the bridge from Thailand. As always, the Savan Vegas office in Thailand provided a free minivan from Mukdahan to the front door of Savan Vegas.
Getting back is a different story - the Savan Vegas "free" bus driver refused to depart without being paid, then dumped us at Lao immigration where we got fleeced for bribes. Less than a year ago this service was free and included express clearance through Lao immigration over to Thailand.

Some of the review's of this hotel are a little harsh, however the place does have some down side's. The hotel on arrival is very Grand outside almost simulating a smaller las vegas casino this is also replicated on the gaming floor with a huge selection of gambling tables andd machines. The room rate was 2000 THB but they did reduce this to 1000 THB per night once I joined the free VIP club. Check in was quite quick, we stayed here as my Brother needed to renew his Visa, the Visa service is very fast and efficient and was back within 24 hour's. The room's are big with Kingsize bed, the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The swimming pool was empty for our stay and in empty I mean no water for reason's not given. The buffet is what you would expect, slop. The western restaurant serve's good food I eat in there twice. The elephant bar is fine and reasonably priced, the Kareoke Bar is a great place if you want a sing song and also a beutiful lady of your choice will join you if thats what you like.
Did'nt feel unsafe in this hotel many security, a good night's sleep but many of the staff we're very miserable. Recommended for visa renewal's.

The reason I stayed here was as part of their Thai Visa Run Program advertised on their website. Excellent value for money and no hassles (recommended). The location of the Hotel is outside of Savanaket, and there's nothing much around. The 3 time daily buffets were accurately described by the previous reviewer. You might have a higher chance getting food / place to sit on weekday.

The room I stayed in was in the same building as the casino; it was clean and spacious and well appointed. The only real downside was a rock hard mattress and slowish (but useable) internet speed. There was a good selection of channels on the LCD TV.

The aroma therapy massages at the Spa are excellent - as good as any I've had in Bangkok and at a reasonable price.

The Casino was swarming with Thai, up-country gamblers. In fact most of them seemed to have come straight from the farm ... no wonder they keep asking for handouts from the red-shirt government.... It's quieter at night.

If your are merely a traveler, my recommendation would be to stay in the town at one of the guest-houses, though Savannakhet is really only worth a couple of hours strolling around the old part of town. No reason to stay at the casino.

Room tip: Ask for a room in the main building facing the outside world.

If this place was only hotel rooms it would be fine. Every room Ive stayed in has been great (they are the ones above the casino, the rooms accross the road are a bit less spacey) Room service is quick and efficient and the massages for 90 minutes are very relaxing. After a good nights sleep thats when the problems arise - BREAKFAST! It is a full on cattle market at the breakfast buffet, going shoulder to shoulder with hungry Thai gamblers trying to get 25kg of food on a single plate, after fighting the mob for a couple of rounds of toast and some cold beans its time to join the queue/scrummage for a fried egg, twenty minutes later I head for the seating area with my now cold platter. Plenty of tables vacant, of people but not crockery. I choose a table with the least amount of dirty plates on it, this amounts to at least 15 dirty and barely eaten servings, and as I say, I chose the table with the least discarded ceramics on it. The other vacant tables are piled higher with left over food whilst the staff present take pleasure in brushing up discarded cocktail sticks.
After such a wonderfull start to the day I head across the casino floor, it smells so much of stale cheap cigarette smoke that you'd think you were in the bookies on a saturday tea time picking up your winnings. Finally, through the throngs of zombied Thais who seem to have been drip fed M150 so they stay gaming all night with this seasons rice crop profits, I find myself at the casino coffee shop, I asked for a Mocha, I was presented with a hi ball glass of ovaltine with some frothy milk resembling speutum floating on it. The poor service on the casino floor continued into the evening, of the three bars on the gambling floor none of them had any beer, not even the coffee shop that had two heavily made up Heineken maidens waiting eagerly to take your order only for them to say "no have"
I wandered down the long driveway and had a few ice cold beer laos at a local karaoke joint, much more enjoyable and it didn't smell!
I must give a thumbs up to the barbers/salon where I always get a trim after a four week stint down Sepon way, and also to the spa who work wonders with their massages and treatments for a reasonable price.
NOW GET ME OUTTA HERE! I WANNA GO HOME!

It was nearly impossible to order lunch or to find a table to consume it at inside the casino! We never tried the gaming, but the first room had an inoperable toilet....the second room was "occupied", & finally the 3rd room was OK except that the housekeeping staff knocked on the door at 11pm & woke me up just to transfer the mini-bar contents from the 1st room! The breakfast buffet was the worst ever....only rice & eggs....& no glassware or clean silverware, toast with no butter, and no clean tables to sit at! Dinner the night before was OK, except that the waiter tried to up sell us on everything we ordered I felt like I was being served by a used car salesman! Most of the staff seemd liked they had just been hired the day before! Next time I'll skip this place & just stay at the nearby resort on the Mekong River!

Room tip: Skip this place & try the nearby resort on the Mekong River!

I stayed in this hotel 15 and 16 June, 2012. Although the uncaring staff of the "new" hotel were clearly uninterested in resolving the two check-in problems (dirty room and brown colored water supply) we managed to get transferred to a room on the casino side by insistent stubbornness. The included breakfasts were mediocre, and many dishes on the buffet were not replenished. Unless you enjoy rude pushy gambling guests, sullen reception staff, and lots of foul cigarette smoke, avoid this dreadful hotel. The only pleasant thing was the cheery women who made up our room. They were smiling and courteous.

Room tip: Choose another hotel in Savannahket and enjoy the limited attractions of the town ... dinosaur museum, Market, temple by the Mekong.
