Called in for a drink and evening meal whilst staying at nearby Black Hall Lodges. So glad we did. This is what you hope for in a local pub. Welcoming atmosphere and staff. Then there's the food. Excellent is the only way to describe it. The steak and ale pie is a must and great value for money. We learnt a little bit of local history from our waiter who was extremely polite and friendly. We've booked to return to Black Hall Lodges later in the year and will definitely be eating here when we here.

Called in for an evening meal.Food good.
Good ambience.
Bit quiet in dining area but comfortable.
As soon as we walked in we were made comfortable and there were a number of locals that spoke with us.
I had a pie for which the pub is renowned and my wife had gammon

If you're looking for a good honest boozer that serves home cooked food (as everyone says, the steak pie is great) you'll go far and wide to find better. We traveled as 3 blokes on a motorbike trip to Wales and stopped the night here before our trip to the mountains, Very friendly staff and owners and instead of an early night ended staying up late as hospitality was that good. Great breakfast in the morning to set us up for the day. Jon and Steph even left a card for us in the morning with some info on what we were chatting about the night before (thanks both). Hopefully we will see you again soon.

Three of us arrived by train - a lovely line and a request stop at Knucklas! - and shown our rooms. They were clean, comfortable and just waht we wanted. There isn't much to see in this tiny village, but we visited the motte and bailey castle and admired the beautifully tended gardens.
The bar was lively, and we later on had a substantial and well cooked meal - not Michelin, but good honest pub grub. The staff were pleasant, and breakfast next morning set us up for a strenuous 15 miles walk.
This is not The Savoy; it's a very pleasant village inn which survives when others have gone to the wall. The staff do their jobs well and should be commended for that.
