“An amazing stay and experience”
Reviewed 26 April 2016 for a stay in April 2016

We traveled to McCarthy in April when most of the town is still shut down. We were referred by someone to Blackburn cabins because they had transportation from the footbridge because you can't drive your car into town. We called and asked about road conditions. Mark was very positive and confident we would have no problems. He was right! The drive was very pleasant and very scenic. We stayed in constant communication about our expected arrival since att does not get service in McCarthy. The road is 60 miles, 10 of which are roughly paved. You don't really want to go over 30 mph since potholes can sneak up on you. We did not have any problems and really enjoyed the drive. Lots of opportunities to take photos. Upon arrival at the footbridge, Our hostess was already waiting for us. She was so friendly and helped load our things into the vehicle. The cabins were spectacular, clean, modern, yet rustic at the same. They had filtered water for us to drink and the mattress was more comfortable than our own bed! The outhouse was so clean and honestly the best outhouse we've ever encountered. The bath house was closed since we arrived a little too early in the spring (pipe freezing concern) but we still took a peek inside. I was jealous I could not take a shower in such an awesome little outside stall. The rental also comes with bicycles which is nice when you can't bring your car. Mark told us about kennecot and things to see around the area. Kennecott was an awesome experience with breathtaking views. Although McCarthy was still mostly closed the folks who were around were very friendly and interested to show us around. Mark and Livy told us about public phones around town that we could call and request our transportation back to the footbridge. We were already packed and they offered to bring our things down so we didn't have to ride the bicycles up the hill again which my thighs were thankful for ;) it was such a great experience and mark and Livy made it even better. Friendly and helpful we will definitely be reccomending them always. We are 5 year homer Alaska residents and this is by far one of the best experiences we've had. Don't miss out on McCarthy and Blackburn cabins.

“Charming, rustic cabin and wonderful service”

The Blackburn Cabins were exactly what we were looking for: appropriately rustic for a wilderness retreat, but offering a luxurious resting spot after arduous day hiking (finally made it to Jumbo mine!)

The cabins have fantastically comfortable mattresses and bedding, and the decor is charming. It was nice to have a sink in the cabin, and a very short walk to a shared outhouse and shower. If you aren't up for that kind of "rustic" experience, then the Blackburn cabins are not for you (one might argue that McCarthy/Kennicott isn't really for you either, but I digress).

The location is ideal - about a mile walk to McCarthy and right near the glacier toe. You feel like you're nicely tucked away from the hubbub of McCarthy, while still being relatively close.

Livvi and Mark were wonderful hosts, accommodating and warm while still letting us to our own devices. I hope to stay here next time I am fortunate enough to spend time here.

Liked least: I suppose if I must nitpick, the shower could use more hooks.
