Overlooking the Dneister river, the fortress is within the buffer zone between Moldova and separatist state, Trans Dniestra. It is an interesting site due to the pleasant view, diverse towers, and a small museum containing a model of the fort and weaponry displays. This fortress is surrounded by a Russian military zone with a checkpoint at its entrance. We had no difficulties but this may present hassles for the unescorted traveler. We spent about 1 hour with a local guide who pointed out architectural features and explained the colorful history (our guide translated into English). We used Slavion Travel (travel-chisinau.com), a tour company from Chisinau, Moldova to help with the logistics.
