Stayed here during our headwater walking holiday. We received a very warm welcome and surprised to discover, at our first dinner, they knew that we are vegetarian and were very helpful. The meals were very good although sometimes we were surprised by what we got because the English description needs improving in order to help you choose. We had a separate vegetarian menu so none of our choices caused us a problem and sometimes we were pleasantly surprised.
They also have an interesting selection of craft beers which I'd recommend you try instead of a bootle of wine.
Our room was very comfortable, clean and cool too situated on the opposite side to the railway. The blackout blinds were a bonus and we slept well.
The continental style Breakfast was good but don't expect a hot buffet. I did enjoy the scrambled egg and their was a great selection of bread and jams.

We came for one night as part of a hiking group but immediately fell for the hotel for its tranquility, cleanness, convenience and comfortable atmosphere. We came back again to stay for a whole week and can testify that this is THE place for anyone who wishes to spend his/ her summer in South Tyrol! The level of attention to detail, the hospitality and the quality of food & services can rival any 5-star chain hotels. It has what the chain hotels don't have: the feeling of home.

I could not agree less with nfarmer13 recent review. The food was absolutely superb. The choice for breakfast was excellent and everything was well prepared and of really good quality, the selection and quality of the bread is wonderful. The evening meals were 6 courses so you did not need gigantic portions. I would truly say the food is 5 star. Agreed the towels were a bit thin and also a very poor hairdryer, but we had a room on the town side with a balcony and it was very good. We only had one pack lunch, which was expensive for what it was, but there are lots of local shops to buy from and most walks have a 'hutte' where you can buy refreshments. This is a comfortable hotel and we really enjoyed our stay.

Stayed there in July during some very hot weather (35 degs) which may cloud my judgement on certain things in this review BUT it's still an average hotel.

Staff were all very nice although here were some who either didn't speak English or just had a smattering.

Bedroom (we had a Junior suite) was roomy with good sized bathroom but these rooms are situated on the railway side of the hotel. Hearing the bells for the level crossing coming down and the loudspeaker announcements at the station wasn't exactly a great wake up call. As with so many hotels the towels provided were small and paper thin - dry your hair and that's it...one sopping wet towel. How large, tall people manage is beyond me.

Bed/mattress was very very hard. Heavy duvets that are rolled up and left in the middle of your bed by the maid. No turn down service.

Food was OK and mostly buffet style at breakfast and also starters for dinner. Unfortunately there are no covers over the meat and cheese and bread and these are visited regularly by flies - lovely. There was an option of boiling/hard boiling your own eggs or scrambled egg which was inevitably empty/very wet/cold (no burner or hot water underneath). No one seemed to take responsibility for checking this and only re filled the bread containers. I have to say for Italy this has the worst tasting 'coffee' I have ever had....normally I can soldier on but had to resort to having tea for breakfast which is unheard of. (However there is a great ice cream shop just up the road which sells excellent coffee!)

I can never understand any hotel that asks you to order all of your courses for dinner at breakfast...well they do here.

Dinner food was again OK but very small portions so many people took lots of starters and finished off with lots of fruit and cheese (again visited by flies every night). The choice of fruit was disappointing. They didn't make the most of local in season produce. we bought some fabulous apricots in the market which were delicious. There were plenty of strawberries and cherries available locally but very few supplied and were used as a garnish.

They have a grandly described 'Gala Dinner' which was actually a joke and the menu underlined it. The hot buffet dinner with he's serving you was so much better with some excellent dishes (shame about the flies).

Dining on the whole wasn't a great experience because there is either no air conditioning in the room or they just didn't open the windows. There was an air con panel where we were sitting and this was turned off just before 2100 each night...presumably as you weren't expected to stay any longer than that. In fact staff made it perfectly obvious that they wanted to make up all the tables for breakfast. As we were sitting with four others we actually wanted to talk and relax not just get up and go.

At breakfast it could be stiflingly hot and not pleasant at all.

Excellent choice of wines and at good prices on the whole. Local Prosecco was excellent. Water can be drunk from the taps and bottled water was a reasonable price.

Advice could be obtained for walks and each holiday company seemed to have it's own book for you to sign in and out of for walks (with destination) for safety. Good idea.

Spa area seemed to be under used but it has a lovely swimming pool albeit that it can get very hot in the seating area (no windows open) and the floor got very slippery after a few people had walked around it.

Sun area outside was a small hard area at the side of the hotel (facing the train station) with a tiny bit of fencing which did nothing to stop people walking past on the road seeing you. It could be so much nicer.

As the temperatures were so hot at night I asked the manager if they had any fans for the bedrooms. He said 'No' and walked away. Maybe some thought should be given to getting some...in case it gets hot again. ( Another local said it was often like that).

In conclusion a good hotel in an excellent location BUT if creature comforts are important this hotel will not be for you. The location near to the station is good for travelling around the area and the bus station is a short walk away. Not really a place where you can go at night to try and find somewhere else to eat.

Room Tip: I don't believe there is one.

Dear nfarmer13

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on tripadvisor.

We are always very grateful to receive feedback from our guests and use the valuable information provided, to help us improve for the future.

We are saddened that you felt some elements of your stay were below standard.

We are happy to hear, that you liked our choice of wines and are truly sorry, that our food especially our daily fruit selection (apricots, water melon, honey melon, cherries, strawberries, pineapple, kiwis, grapes and nectarines), our morning coffee choice (espresso, cappuccino, latte macchiato...) and our five course Gala Dinner failed to meet expactations.

Indeed we are quite lucky this summer with quite unusal high temperatures during the day. Thank's to Toblach's elevation of 1.240m we may enjoy cool evenings. With pleasure we will overthink to get some fans, if one has to hot in the room, though.

We would certainly never have wanted you to leave unhappy and would always much rather speak to guests whilst they are still with us to address any issues and take steps to ensure that we can recover as much as possible from a situation.

However we do hope that you will perhaps in future give us an opportunity to redeem ourselves and thank you again for sharing your thoughts.

Kind regards,
Family Fuchs

We stayed here on a previous occasion, as part of a Headwater tour. This time we DIY'd it with a couple of advantages, apart from cost obviously, including booking the hotel's full board "Moments for Hiking" deal which includes daily packed lunch; use of walking poles and day sacks, and a session at the hotel's Wellness Suite - though my Better Half actually used both mine and her own! We flew to Venice and had a somewhat complex journey to the hotel: coach to Mestre; train to Fortezza; train to Toblach. The return was simpler and quicker: Cortina Express coach via Cortina and straight on from there to the airport. The food is great - unless you want chips with everything. To top it all our visit coincided with the annual Mahler festival, and the concerts are held just a few hundred yards away.

The pool is small, but you can swim OK; there's a jacuzzi and (separately as it is a-la-continental dress code) sauna suite are great.

Many thanks to Andreas, Sandra, Lisa, Stefano, Andrea, Ceylan, Luca and all the rest; not least the "invisible ones" who keep the rooms, and everything else, so clean.
