Owner description: Aurora Holidays arranges you a winter holiday to never forget. With us you can experience different winter activities, chase the northern lights and have an introduction into Sami culture which is very much alive here in Utsjoki. Don't forget that Utsjoki is an excellent destination year-round. Spring, summer and fall - lots of things to see and experience.

We had a fantastic 6 days staying with Aurora holidays experiencing and doing things totally new and unique to us - they have opened another world. We saw the lights with all their exquisite beauty on our first 3 nights such a strange experience pulsing, intensifying, swirling etc all in silence. The sky was clear and there was lots of solar activity so we viewed the lights from around the cottages and walking down onto the frozen river. The two guides Maria and Emilia were charming, competent, thoughtful and enthusiastic. They were very caring and entertaining. We went snowshoeing, husky sledding and on snowmobiles in the fens. Great.
Top holiday with an extremely professional team.

We stayed 6 days at utsjoki in a very nice and comfortable cottage facing the (frozen) river. We did really enjoy the place and the activities (snowshoeing, dog sledding, snowmobile, visits, ...)
Unforgettable experience for who wants to flee from busy and noisy life; simply enjoying silence, amazing landscape and wilderness. We were also lucky : clear sky providing fabulous aurora lights. Many special thanks to Tiina, Emilia and Maria who make our stay fantastic.

To go to Finland and chase the Northern Light wasn't my idea at all. It was on my partner's bucket list, and of course, I went along with it. The funny thing is that at the end I enjoyed it probably more then he did. Mostly it happened because of Tiína and her enthusiastic team, Maria and Emilia. We booked an Aurora Holiday with her, in a self-contained cottage, nearby Utsjoki village, on the side of Teno - Tana River, on the Norvégian border. A beautiful, peaceful place where I would happily spend not only five days but five weeks or more. Our accommodation was equipped with absolutely everything, that one can imagine. Since there were just the two of us, we had two bedrooms, a big lounge-dining room, a kitchen packed with all the kitchen tools and necessary spices also with olive oil, vinegar, flour, sugar, salt, coffee, tea, cocoa powder, etc. In the longe room in a chest of the drawer were batteries, light bulbs, bandages, Panadol tablets a set of colored pencils and paper for the kids, absolutely everything that one maybe need for a comfortable, delightful holiday. To the bathroom was an adjacent sauna and at the front a small terrace with table and chairs. This part of the house when the temperature was usually under - 20 and went down till - 34, wasn't too useful but doesn't need a very vivid imagination to see, how relaxing is to sit there and watch the river flowing away and the opposite "fell" that is already Norway. The location is perfect, and windows are opening in three directions. One night I woke up at 2.30 and could see, that Aurora is in a playful mood and performing busily on the sky. We thought that she needs an audience, so we set in the window and enjoyed the heavenly show. Tiína and her team did everything to make our holiday the possibly most successful and delightful for us. Sometimes Aurora came to the cottages to visit us, other time like a whimsical lady, wanted us to run after her. Maria drove for hours, covering a vast distance, but finally found her and she gifted this desperate little group with a beautiful dance across the sky.
Next, to the cottages on the side of the river, there is little round hut with an open fire and seats around it. This is the place where we went for warm up, and Tiína fried sausages and marshmallow, and made pancakes with the very rare cloudberry jam. The last night Maria was the hostess and eating cookies we chatted the evening away since Aurora was impolite and didn't want to say God bye to us.
The booking includes a village tour to Utsjoki. That is a great possibility to learn a bit more about Saaami people and their land and history, to whom our hostess Tiina and her partner Mika also belonged.
It was a holiday which I always will remember to.

everything about this 5 day self catered holiday was perfect, the friendly welcome at the airport, the help with the shopping, the drive to the accommodation, the extremely well equipped, comfortable cottage, the evening around the fire with other guests and Tiina cooking sausages and pancakes. then there were the amazing day trips, the night trips hunting the lights, the ones over the cabins were also great. thanks Tiina, Maria, Emillia and Mika we had a great time

The Northern Lights were on my Bucket List, so my partner found this company which sounded promising but you need to book like a year in advance. It turns out there was an empty cabin when we stayed but we did book a year in advance. It isn't cheap, in fact the package is only the start so you need to get there, almost certainly rent special winter clothes and maybe an extra night in Helsinki either way, but after all that we thought it was great value.
January and February are probably the best months to see the lights. We went the last week in February and we saw them 4 nights out of 5 despite lots of clouds and snow. It reached -34C at one point. Don't try to drive this one because the roads are icy, animals on the road, and there are some idiot drivers looking to run into you head-on. They will meet your flight at Ivalo 2.5 hours drive to the camp. You can fly to Ivalo from Helsinki on Finnair or Norwegian and there seems to be a flight from Amsterdam. We chose Finnair because they fly to/from our starting point Budapest twice daily. We arrived in Helsinki the afternoon before and stayed there overnight. We rented special clothes from a company in Helsinki called Winterwear which you pick up and drop off at Vantaa (Helsinki) airport. Just follow instructions on the Aurora website.
In addition to the Northern Lights you have optional activities like a tour of Utsjoki, dogsledding and snowmobiling. There are charges for the last two because they involve outside companies. We did the dogsledding which involved driving to Norway where you let six Husky dogs pull you (or you can drive if you're game) in a wooden sled for two hours. Although Norway is not in the EU and Finland is, they have worked out an agreement where you can freely cross the border which is useful as the camp, like Utsjoki proper, is just across the river from Norway.
We saw the Lights on the first night although in retrospect they were the least spectacular. My partner got really good photos the second night with help from hostess Tiina who lent her a spare tripod. If you have a tripod, bring it because you'll need extended exposures at ISO 1200 or similar in order to get the lights. I have a quality Sony video camera with special low light setting and got absolutely nothing although there was a professional photographer with us (not a tourist) being paid to get video of the lights and somehow he succeeded (but then he spent a month there). The third night we saw the best lights and again they appeared the fourth night but the fifth was just clouds and snow.
For me this really was a once in a lifetime experience. They are open in the summer for salmon fishing, berry and mushroom picking and hiking. There are currently only four cabins each with two bedrooms so they can sleep 4 adults and when we stayed there was a Finnish family of five so obviously they can arrange extra beds. The dogsledding is a bit rough (I turned 76 in our stay) so expect bruises and each of the four sleds on our visit overturned or hit trees so if you have doubts about that just don't tick that option.
