Best snorkelling ever!!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 31 July 2019via mobile
Casual and friendly resort. OK food. Waterfront bures very cool- intimate with amazing views and loved the outdoor shower. The best thing about this resort was by far the snorkelling and the amazing work they are doing on reef restoration-recommend marine bio tour and snorkelling with mantas. This was by the far best “walk in” snorkelling I have ever seen at a resort!!! Coral so thick you can’t even see any rocks- many different fish species, purple starfish, lobster, rays, etc- amazing! Morning hike also nice with amazing views.
Vinaka vacalevu to all the staff at barefoot manta.

Accommodation: dorm Bure was small, but new and right on the beach. Showers are cold water only. Washrooms are cleaned regularly although showers sometimes smelled bad. Wifi is pretty good.

Activities: this island has a lot to offer! With three beaches, you won’t feel cooped up at all! Lots of scheduled activities (free and paid) each day, including great marine talks by the marine biologists, hikes, volleyball, village trips, sunset cruise, and evening resort activities. The diving was fantastic.

Food: overall great quality. Breakfast had a great selection of items and an omelet station which was delicious! Each meal offers about 3 options to choose from or a buffet. Chefs are very accommodating if you want to modify any of the set meals. Serving staff are very well-organized and food is delivered quickly. Bar also offered a variety. Meal times are flexible compared to some other resorts we stayed at.

Staff: all were very friendly and eager to help us with anything. Very easy to find a staff member if you needed something. Staff had high energy and were eager to interact with the tourists. Activities/dive staff were especially accommodating and flexible with dive times. We only had one issue with not being given shower towels upon arrival and even after asking 4 different staff members for towels, it took a very long time for these to be delivered. Otherwise, no complaints at all as staff at this resort were fantastic!

My wife and I stayed here for five nights on our first anniversary and it proved to be a very special place in the Yasawa Islands. It is slightly more humble / less showy than some of the other resorts (More bohemian) but excelled in warmth and it's welcoming nature. The staff were incredible - it felt to be the most authentic Fijian experience we had throughout the islands with the perfect balance of being able to come and go as we pleased whilst also experience Fijian culture / music / hospitality and great activities. Saki - the ringleader of island entertainment had us in stitches almost every night with his infectious laughter.

The absolute star of the show is the island reef, accessible straight from the beach which is cared for and maintained by the island staff and contains easily the best soft corals on which we dived and snorkelled throughout the entire Yasawa island chain (and we dived at plenty of other places). The whole reef is immaculate and easily accessed by a sandy channel. Unlike the other islands there is an on site marine biologist who gives talks and guided tours. Every morning the call to spot manta rays wakes the island and so if you are desperate to see one this is your best bet. These are found just off the resort and is the location all the other resorts travel to - only the difference here is that you will only be summoned to see them when they are actually present (as spotters are sent out in the morning). If you are looking to see marine life - this is the best spot. It is great to know that the dollars spent staying here actually go directly into reef and manta ray research, coral planting and improving the reef further.

The food was exceptional on every single day.

We would recommend this for backpackers, young travellers, young couples and more bohemian / adventurous families. A laid back, easy going resort full of good times and astounding nature. Other resorts cater for luxury - this one caters for authenticity. We really hope to come back one day.

The sunrise dorms were great. There are multiple beaches to choose from, so there is usually one that you can be on if there is a breeze. There is a compulsory fee of 119 a day that covers food, kayaks, internet, most guided talks etc.Things will vary from day to day but for our stay there were that there were no towels in several of the rooms (including rooms with en suites). Food varied from adequate to good (breakfasts were great). The water is safe, but desalinated, so will not suit every bodies tastes. Take antihistamines as there may be sea lice there and some people react badly. A dilute vinegar solutions is meant to help too. Snorkeling is good off Sunrise beach, although there is cyclone damage and some bleaching. Swimming with the Mantas is hit and miss (they are wild animals). Some had an awesome experience, other were underwhelmed. I can recommend Robs talks and participating in the ones that the resort offers. The staff were great, we would go back for them alone.

It's so worth leaving mainland Fiji to explore this little island. The staff are so warm and accommodating and there are endless water and land activities. I can't recommend this place enough.
The marine bio centre is cool, we went to the manta talk and then we got to swim with them, it really was amazing.

The dorms were honestly some of the best as far as location goes. Beach right on your front door. Comfy beds and good mosquito nets with no holes or gashes like some places. Food was great (though they may not tell you until you get there that you have to pay the compulsory price for the package- food, wifi, amenities) along with other inclusions in package. Would’ve been nice to know I had to pay that. I didn’t mind though because it was all great. I saw mantas. Coral and snorkelling. Was fantastic!! Got stung by jelly fish and sea lice- can’t be helped and acceptable price for what I saw underwater... however, many guests including me were attacked by bed bugs. It honestly ruined such an otherwise paradise like getaway. I heard they were getting new beds but when I spoke to a staff member she just said she couldn’t see any bugs and brought an air freshener to spray my bed and make it better 🤔

Bula Abigail F

Thanks for your review and I'd like to take this opportunity to respond to a few of the issues you have raised for reviewers.

Food:
Unfortunately I'm unaware of who you booked through however all of our industry partners - whether they be a travel agent, online booking platform or on our own website - clearly state that we have a mandatory Resort Package.
This is very different to that of a "meal plan" like so many other resorts. Ours we believe is excellent value for money as we charge FJ$119 per adult per day and FJ$60 per child per day (children aged 5-12yrs inclusive). The Resort package is value packed and inclusive of lunch, dinner and breakfast daily, Wi-Fi, non-motorized water sports (excluding dive) and a personal aluminium water bottle (allowing us to alleviate single use plastic). No additional charges for the above means no surprises when you arrive at the resort. We have taken care of that for you.

It would be of a great assistance if you could please take the time to email us to advise who you booked through so I can ensure all the correct information is given in future. Vinaka. Unfortunately Trip Advisor does not allow us to put our email addresses on this forum however you will find our contact details on our website (which we are also not allowed to put on here).

Snorkeling
So pleased you got to see the visiting Manta Ray. They are absolutely amazing. Again unlike other resorts please do know (which is advised in our Marine Biologists daily manta ray presentation) that much of the proceeds of this activity is put back into the research we compile each year with our great partners from Manta Trust. We learn more and more each day with the research that is undertaken and hope you got to experience the presentation.

Bed Bugs: Yes they are a pest for you and for us. With so many tourists coming to the remote tropical islands they bring them into the resort with them. Certainly not saying it was you but could have been someone who stayed in your dorm with you.
Bed Bugs are unfortunately as common as the house fly or mosquito in any tropical environment for those travelling remote places. They are carried in guests luggage and clothes and when guests put their bags on the beds or furniture they are easily transferred to bedding. Hence guests think its the resorts that breed the bed bugs, but this not the case.
Bed bugs are certainly not a sign of any thing to do with hygiene. Our housekeeping team are on the look out constantly for them but at times will also miss the tiny creatures.
We take the treatment of bedbugs very seriously and once they are found the treatment process begins, however they cannot be treated with you in the room so I had to have a little giggle at your air freshener story and I'm sure a break down in communication by what the staff member was doing at the time. We are all aware room freshener does not get rid of the Bed Bugs.

It is advisable for all guests travelling to be aware of where they put their luggage and clothing and if you suspect there are bed bugs in a room you are staying in or people you may have been travelling with have or have had bed bugs then it is quite likely the bugs would have spread to your luggage and/or clothing. They can even transfer to your luggage from another bag that is being transferred by boat or plane. You would never know.

To treat for bed bugs you must wash all your clothes in hot water and luggage and all belongings (if they cant be washed) must be put out in the hot sun. The resort will then close the room and treat it.

We are sorry that this perhaps caused only a two star rating on what could have been such a better score but we really need to make people aware when travelling how the bed bugs end up at the resort and not just our resort but every resort and hotel world wide.

Thank you Abigail F for mentioning this in your honest review so that it allowed me to respond so that other reviewers can now be better informed on the issues you raised.

We wish you safe onward travels.

Warm Fiji Regards
