This will be a totally honest and comprehensive review. I would not want anyone else to make the mistake we did in renting Casa Del Mar. The advertising couldn't be further from the truth!
The road to there is terrible. The parking area for the unit is so small that you can only get into and out of the car from one side. When we entered the casa we didn't even recognize the place; it was so different from what we saw online. We had been told that everything was new; nothing was new! A cabinet in the kitchen wouldn't even close. Every morning the bathroom vanity and floor were covered by the leavings of termites eating the wooden mirror and a bathroom cabinet above. When we showed the housekeeper a photo of the huge number of termites, we were told not to worry about it! No action was taken about the termite infestation. We tried to call the owner, but usually all we got was a recording in Spanish, despite having an international phone plan. We were able to call relatives in the US, but when they called the owner, she was very terse with them and never did call us about the termites.
The level of cleanliness was appalling for even such a remote location. A sign in the bathroom literally said: "If it's yellow, let it mellow; if it's brown, flush it down. Put all toilet paper in the wastebasket. Don't flush it." The smell in the heat and humidity was very unpleasant. Sheets were supposed to be changed weekly and towels twice weekly. Neither ever happened. We ended up washing the towels ourselves.
We were there 9 days and were able to access the Internet about 15 minutes on one day! At one point we were told the best internet access was to take your laptop into the community laundry in front of the east window, but that didn’t work either. The listing for the property promised satellite television and a DVD player. It took 3 days to be able to watch TV; 5 days to get a working DVD player. In both cases, the caretaker had to move equipment from another unit after renters moved out.
It was 102 degrees when we arrived. The advertised option of paying an additional $45 for a few hours of air conditioning was not available because the generator was broken. There is no cross ventilation in the bedroom. Despite this, the owner told us to use the floor fans sparingly because they use so much electricity!
But the very worst thing was that this is not a place to go if you want to snorkel. The 3 reef fingers are about an inch tall and brown! There are so few fish, it's unbelievable! I've seen more fish in a doctor's office aquarium. The water really is right there, but you can't snorkel due to the constant traffic of dive tour trucks and boats coming and going all day long, and they're extremely noisy! The surf is also much too rough. There is NO beach. I don't know where they took the pictures shown above because there was no more than about a 20 to 30 foot wide access. On both sides of the property the "beach" consists of crude concrete and metal construction.
We've been on at least a dozen snorkeling vacations and have never been disappointed...until this one. The only good part about this vacation was going home. I've never written a review like this before and I'm not a really picky, crabby person. This was just a truly terrible "vacation" because the owner completely misrepresented Casa Del Mar. We honestly wouldn't go back again for free.......
Please don't waste your money.
Casa del Mar is beautifully appointed. There is good air circulation and light and the bedding is very comfortable. The wrap-around patio has chaises, a table and umbrellas, hammocks, and a barbeque. Responsive on-site caretakers helped us as needed. A great bonus for staying here is access to complimentary snorkel gear, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and floaters. Cas del Mar's location on the beach allows for great views of the water and easy access for swimming and kayaking. We originally had booked Casa del Mar for September 2014, but had to cancel due to the hurricane. We appreciate the owner's flexibility in honoring our credit almost two years later. Cabo Pulmo feels wild, remote, and pristine, yet it is no further a drive from the airport than the hectic urban and commercial environment of Cabo San Lucas.
