Review of Mt Paris Dam

Mt Paris Dam
Reviewed 13 May 2018

Mt Paris Dam turnoff is on the Tasman Highway at Branxholm. I visited Mt Paris Dam in January 2018 on a rather wet day. On arrival at the dam there is an easy walking track of about 100 meters down to the dam wall. Here there is an opening between the buttresses over large rough surface. On emerging through to the other side I was greeted with an amazing scene of small cascades and large Ferns growing adjacent to the entrance. It gave me a surreal feeling of having entered into another dimension.

As the Cascade River was very low, there were pathways around large boulders and a large amount of holes in the rock floor which had to be circumnavigated. The rocks are covered in lichen or maybe moss and were very slippery so please take care in the wet. As there was a wedding being set up at the time I was there, I took a few snaps and left long before I wanted to. It was such a fascinating place and I know I will return there at some future date. While older children would handle the area, supervision of younger children strongly advised. Well worth a visit.

Great piece of local history and a great feat of workmanship . Photographers delight .
Travelling east just outside Branxholm take the signposted turn to Mt Paris Dam - 13km .
Reset your trip meter to 0 at this point . At almost exactly 13 km there will be a reasonably well used track running downhill to your left . This is the turn - someone has stolen the sign ! If your car is low to the ground walk from here its only about 150 m .
Well worth the look . You can continue on the same road through to Welborough and the Tasman Highway ; another 6km.

This place is so surprising. The turnoff is on the road between Branxholm and Weldborough (less than the half way mark from Branxholm) and then there's a 13km gravel road which is fine for 2WD. You then walk about 100m to the dam wall and OMG it's like something prehistoric. You come upon this huge wall with "doorways" in it. One of them has been knocked through and you can peer through into another world of rocks and ferns. The wall is a discontinued dam and when you walk through you enter another world. It's a photographer's dream and I just couldn't get enough. This is absolutely a must see! This posting doesn't allow for photos but I will post them once it is approved.
