My husband and I and our two adult sons stayed in le chai château de charras for one week, we had a lovely family holiday, the owners had a welcome grocery pack available for us when we arrived which was much appreciated as we arrived late in the evening. The house is comfortable and welcoming, it has a well equipped kitchen, 3 spacious bedrooms and a fabulous shower in a great bathroom. Their was lots of tourist information in the house and friendly locals happy to help and give suggestions on where to visit. The village is beautiful and locals were friendly and our lack of French did not pose a problem. The location is fantastic for visiting areas such as cognac, angouleme and especially brantome which should not be missed. We highly recommend this letting for families or any groups so much so we have booked to return this year and can't wait.
Thankfully we found this house in Le Chai, Chateau de Charras near Angouleme for our Easter hols as we'd been let down last minute by another place near Brantome and are glad we did as it it a very nice place.
It's hard to describe the Chateau as it is not a typical complex or a resort and has a number of houses and apartments of varying sizes.
The grounds are huge and the Pool is great and the Tennis court looks like it has just been resurfaced and we were blessed with the weather so the kids were able to run their hearts out every day and so slept well at night.
There were a good few people around but it was not overcrowded and the boys had other children to play with so they had a good time.
Le Chai is made up of 3 houses and ours was the middle one and by far the largest of the 3.
My husband says the house is like the Tardis and is really spacious and has everything you'd need. There's 2 double bedrooms and a twin room and the bathroom has a great walk-in shower and the kitchen has a new induction hob and cooker. There is UK TV and DVD in the sitting room plus a 2nd DVD in the twin bedroom which was handy at night to keep the kids entertained and the Wi-Fi signal and speed were good.
There is a shop and bakery in the village and a Carrefour on the way into Angouleme and 2 Super U supermarkets near enough.
There is a new good size BBQ in the back garden but we didn't use it as we're not BBQ fans and we found a very nice restaurant nearby which had lovely French food but cooked like we would at home and was good value.
The thing I really liked was the "meet and greet" which was done by a Welsh lady that lives beside the Chateau and she was friendly and helpful.
We had a nice relaxing holiday and it all went smoothly and we'd strongly consider staying there again and maybe for 2 weeks next time.
A group of us stayed here in September to attend the Circuit de Ramparts festival in Angouleme.
Fantastic property with all the original, authentic and unique features you'd expect from a building of its time. I loved the original beams in particular. It's a spacious 3 bedroom property with all the appliances and equipment you need for your stay.
There are a number of properties in Charras which are mainly owner occupied - great for local knowledge.
The pool is lovely and clean and was actually heated which was a nice touch - a bit of a sun trap.
There's also an outdoor table tennis which is a nice feature. A few competitive games were had!
Other things to do in the area is go karting and paintball which was great craic.
There's also some lovely restaurants in the area with locally sourced produce and very reasonably priced.
We went into Angouleme on a number of occasions over the Circuit de Ramparts weekend and were really impressed. It's a beautiful city with loads of sights to see.
Suitable for families looking for a quiet relaxing holiday.
We stayed here for a week in July and had a great time! We arrived in late, driving from Bordeaux so thankfully it was very easy to find. The house is a converted stables and was very well fitted out with appliances and utensils for cooking, lots of things to bring to the swimming pool (floats, armbands, toys etc.) and racquets and balls for the tennis court. The bathroom looked newly done up and had a lovely large shower. My five year old spent a lot of time in the pool area and collecting apples in the orchard, there were toys for her to play with in the house too so she is still asking when we are going back! We had a rainy day there but there is a lot to see and do within a short drive. We will definitely be coming back some time soon
We stayed in Le Chai Chateau de Charras for 2 weeks in August 2014 and had a superb holiday in a very nice place and we asked the owner if we could stay again in August 2015 but sadly the house was booked. The owner asked me if i'd leave a review which i'm happy to do. The house is very well equipped and spacious with UK tv & dvd player & good Wi-Fi. The enclosed outside area off the sitting room was nice for al fresco dinning. There is a newly renovated restaurant just outside the gates & the shop has a good selection plus there is a bakery in the village. The housekeeper could not have been more helpful and even had got some shopping in for us as we were arriving late. The grounds are well maintained and the pool was a bit hit with our boys. There is a friendly & social feel to the Chateau & it's quite a relaxed & easy going place. There's a lot to do in the area if you feel like day trips. I think we'll try to book earlier next year as we were disappointed not to be going this year.
