Casa Jorg / Hostal Las Palmas, Casilda / Trinidad
My wife and I stayed at the above for four nights during early June 2015 and I thought it would be useful to review this Casa as we believe it deserves a good review and because we didn’t really know what to expect when we arrived.

Casa Jorg is in the middle of a small village, Casilda, approx half way between Trinidad and Playa Ancon. Both are approx. 2 miles away so we caught the tame taxi wherever we went out for a standard fare of 5CUC (£3.50). There is a small harbour in Casilda which we understood is out of bounds and government controlled so we dint visit it. Casilda is a fairly poor but typically Cuban village which straddles a small railway which runs down the centre of the village between the harbour and Trinidad. The train looks like a small coach and only runs a few times each day, avoiding the dogs, chickens and goats.

CJ comprises a house and a new two storey block. We had a ground floor room in the new block, which has 5 letting rooms. I am not sure how many letting bedrooms there are in the main house but all rooms have external entrances and an outside area or balcony.
The main house is occupied by Jorg and his entourage. I had no idea who was family and who was staff but we saw the same friendly faces everyday.
There was no sign outside and the front is very unassuming so when we arrived I would not let the taxi driver go until we confirmed we were at the right place. It was.

There seems to be two yard areas, one which is in a Spanish style has the bar, outside dining area, Jacuzzi and shady space for relaxing . The other yard has the separate block, small pool and sun lounging area. The separate block looks to have recently been completed, it has plenty of concrete balustrades etc which still need painting.
Our room was spacious and had two double beds, a fridge/ mini bar and an ensuite shower room with access onto a small outside area with table and chairs. Everything was clean and functional, no shower curtain but the bathroom was large so it didn’t matter. The beds were firm but OK. The mini bar was well stocked so we used it to provide water and drinks for the entire stay. It wasn’t expensive.
The room was cleaned every day and fresh towels were provided.
The first floor room in the separate block is truly palatial so if you want somewhere special treat yourself to this room. I don’t know the cost but it will be worth it whatever.

The food was the best we had in Cuba. Breakfast was fresh fruit juice, fresh fruit, freshly baked warm bread, omlettes or eggs, jams, coffee, cold meat and cheese. All beautifully presented and tasty.
We were given a different choice of 3 course evening meal each night and they were all beautifully prepared and tasty. I will let them surprise you. You won’t be disappointed.
Only Jorg speaks English but the waitresses/ chambermaids and barman all tried hard to make themselves understood and this added to the experience.
I don’t know whether it is seasonal but the only down side was the presence of flies around the table. The room was sprayed everyday but I guess they cant spray outside.
A local couple arrived one evening to sing which was a nice touch.

Obviously you will visit Trinidad, day time and night time and the local beaches. There are a number of trip itineraries in the room . Apparently Jorg organises these without taking any commission so definitely do the 3Km walk in the mountains beyond Tope (SP?). I cant remember the name of the guide but he spoke perfect english and knew every pland and animal species. Someone also recommended the catamaran tour to a nearby island. Diving can also be arranged.

Jorg is German although he has lived in Cuba for 24 years. He speaks English perfectly, as well as Spanish and German obviously. Jorg and his family / staff will help in any way they can so just ask, especially for taxis, trips laundry etc.
The other guests were all Austrian or German when we were there so I guess Jorg advertises over there. We don’t speak any Spanish or German but it didn’t stop us talking to the other guests and Jesus, see below, after a few mojitos.
We paid 32CUC (£20) per day, each, for bed breakfast and evening meal in low season. What can I say ?
The staff / family are really friendly and nice people, I have to mention Jesus (pronounced hair souse), the barman, the two smiling waitresses who had the job of determining what time and what we would like to eat each day and the cook who turned out the most superb meals, her roast potatoes were amazing.
Obviously we would recommend Casa Jorg. It is a little far from Trinidad but the taxi turns up in a flash. The local area is run down but so is the rest of Cuba.
One final point, please tip well in Cuba, especially for good service, which you will definitely get at Casa Jorg.

Room Tip: Any room facing south.

What a great moment to jump into the pool! We did like the place because of Jörg who is the such a freindly and welcoming host, because of Jesus who is the Master of Mojito at the pool bar and who loves Music, becaus of the lovely ladies team at breakfast and dinner: ask for the lobster! We had to change our travel plans and Jörg arranged everything for us incl a stay just across the street in another lovely place with Mangos to be eaten directly from the tree! We liked being a little away from the centre as the place is also very near playa Ancon and easy to get from there to any place in the surroundings of Trinidad. Soon he will have the new house ready with a larger swimming pool. We met nice other travellers with similar interests which allowed us spending some really enchanting and interesting moments. We will come back! thanks a lot

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms in the new building!

We stayed here with family. We found atmosphere, owner and the food great. Place has little pool with bar with best drinks we ever had. So you can relax and cool down after sight seeing.
Food is amazing well served and there is big choice.
The only downside is location. It is a bit on a side. But if you have a car its no issue. Otherwise you can rent easily horse carriage going to city.

This casa is located a little out of the way so unless you have a car, you will be needing a taxi going into Trinidad or to the beach. Unfortunately, even though we had a reservation, there was no room for us so he sent us next door. The room was disappointing. We were offered a room at Las Palmas the next morning, but it really didn't look much better. We stayed one night and went into Trinidad and found something spectacular seconds from Plaza Mayor (for the same price)

I will say though, the dinner we had at Las Palmas was probably the best dinner we had in Cuba!

One of those few times on which the comments of the tripadvisor people do not match my views on how something should be, difference of opinion of course. The car had to be parked outside. There was a camera, but I doubt they had someone watching all day.
We found the receipt and our stay poor and did not feel welcome. Inside it looked messy with all kind of stuff in the " lounge" and in the corridor. Obviously used as a storage space. We stayed for 2 nights and had to switch to another room after the first night. That was said when we arrived. Why? I do not know, although the first room was quite built in and closed. In the second room one could step into the open air, that is to say, still within the walls of the premises and next to the kitchen. I like open airy spaces and nice views. None of that in casa La Palma. The place had a dusty look (even the plants in the " garden") and in our first room the results of the previous guest where still visible on the mirror over the basin. The breakfast was nice - specially if you like home made bread - but other cases serve much better.
I will not go back here, that's clear.

Room Tip: I even did not bother to make photo's.
