Dollag's Cottage is situated in Shawbost, conveniently placed for many of the sights you'll want to visit including the standing stones at Callanish, the old black house at Arnol, the numerous beautiful beaches such as Dalmore and about a twenty minutes drive from Stornoway.

Dollanna, the owner, is one of the most thoughtful hosts you'll come across and has really thought of everything you could ever need to make your stay an enjoyable one.

We arrived late at night but this was no problem to Dollanna who took the time to show us round her beautiful cottage and to chat about the island. In addition to this, Dollanna had made us a massive plate of sandwiches, accompanied with a big plate of homemade cakes and sweet treats! This really was appreciated after a long journey from Edinburgh.

The cottage itself has everything you need, want and more! Dollanna really has thought of everything from the way the house is decorated to the equipment she has made available to guests, including cookery books, a kitchen with every possible gadget you could need and nice touches like binoculars, picnicking plates and cutlery and even a telescope! Having WiFi is a real plus too when you want to read up more about the island.

The cottage is cosy and warm and a beautiful place to come back to after a long day touring the island.

Dollanna is a genuinely kind and caring host for whom nothing is any bother; she even told us to pop in to her house for a coffee if we needed anything.

I cannot recommend this property highly enough!

“A gem of a cottage on a gem of an island”
Reviewed 22 May 2016 for a stay in May 2016

We stayed in Dollag's Cottage for an idyllic two weeks in early May. 2016. The cottage is named after the owner, Dollanna's, grandmother. Dollanna greeted us with a really warm Hebridean welcome, showing us around and demonstrating how everything worked. There was a huge platter of freshly made sandwiches and a delicious cake topped with cream and strawberries, together with milk and biscuits in the fridge. Dollanna had warned us to stock up with provisions when we left Stornoway on the Saturday as pretty much everything is closed on Sundays. However we need not have worried as the sandwiches also provided for an excellent picnic on the Sunday.
The cottage is really on a croft surrounded by other dwellings and a short stroll to the beach passing through fields of sheep and lambs and the omnipresent remains of the iconic Lewis black houses. Dollag's had everything you could need for a holiday; from deckchairs to sun cream and midge repellant, numerous towels, picnic equipment, thermos flasks, all the foils and cling wraps, shower gels, even a spotting scope for observing the wild life. We have NEVER stayed is such a well equipped holiday home.
A good 3 mile hike south on the machair takes you along coastal cliff paths where we watched seals in the water, to the picturesque beaches of Dial Beg and Dial Mor where we surfed alone in clear blue waters, pounding soft white sand beaches.
The west coast is quiet but ideal for exploring the Brochs, black houses, standing stones and particularly the beaches (although Tolsta and Garri on the east coast are magnificent too). Bravas, Ness and Callanaish are very accessible and the cross island drive to Stornoway was a delight for someone used to the hurly burly of southern traffic.
The cottage's neighbours are all very friendly, particularly Anna and Iain next door. Iain is a traditional Harris tweed weaver and delighted in showing us what was involved and how much effort was required.
We fell in love with the Island and will definitely return to stay in Dollag's Cottage again.
PS if you like fine single malt be sure to visit the distillery on Uig!
