Spent a few nights here and it was absolutely lovely. Staff were brilliant (in particular Stallon!), food was exceptional (fish tacos were amazing!) and the pool area was a definitely highlight. Love the walking/running trails over the island and also thoroughly enjoyed our nightly bushbaby visit (we decided to call him frank )

All in all, great stay if you’re wanting to get away from WiFi and the buzz of the city. would come back for sure.

This gave us a good laugh.. Bushy has received many interesting names and always stirs excitement when he visits the restaurant! We're glad you enjoyed your stay and thank you for the shout-out to Stallon. We hope you will be back again and appreciate your time in leaving this wonderful review. Zikomo Ross!

As most reviews and the description of the lodge explain, Blue Zebra (named after the Blue Zebra Cichlid) is located on an island in the lake itself. It is secluded and intimate. The staff were helpful from the moment our boat picked us up from the shore to the moment we left. We had a lovely and warm greeting with a specially prepared drink and full briefing on what to expect on our stay including the operating times of the generator (not a problem at all as phones can be charged from the solar station at the bar outside of those times). This also included any possible risks from animals that may reside or visit the island.
Being in a national park there is a rich array of animals to see, including the multiple rainbow skinks that bask, a thick-tailed bush baby, hornbills, fireflies, weavers, spiders and so on. It is a really beautiful place in the wet season, lush and bright. I personally loved the tent-style rooms and found them surprisingly cool in the evening. Solar-powered fans would be a nice touch but not essential in my opinion.
I really liked the food. I really appreciated that they could cater to my vegan diet. Everything tasted fresh and full of flavour. The fresh press coffee was great.
My biggest praise though is for the staff. Any hotel would be lucky to have these people as their staff. They are warm, kind, gracious, accommodating and clearly well-trained with full knowledge of their respective roles.
We had a great stay here and would be very happy to return.

Even though it was a short stay, we had such an amazing time at Blue Zebra. Being off the grid really allows you to relax and unwind. There is plenty of things to do here like hiking, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, and yoga.
The manager, Ken, clearly cares about his team and making this a great working environment. The staff is always willing to help and answer any question. I have to give a special shoutout to Stallon, as his service was fantastic and he was just a really nice guy.
I would come back here in a heartbeat! Thanks for a fantastic stay!

I visited blue zebra as part of a conference being held at the venue.

The lodge briefed us as part of its pre arrival information that we would need to enter the water to board the boat so all members of the team where adequately prepared and the staff assisted with the luggage and we had to only worry about getting ourselves onboard the boat.

Upon arrival I was blown away by the beauty of the island and the fantastic location which is just a stones throw from Lilongwe. The lodge conference facility is open and a grand thatched tacitly so there is a great view throughout and great fresh air to stop those feeling sleepy. We where able to work away and have a bulbul and paradise fly catcher join the conference as they popped in and out of the conference room to join the group. Came as great amusement when they sat to watch the presentation with 12 of us.

Facilities are well equipped and a large screen was provided as well as refreshments.

Food was fantastic rooms where beautifully presented with fresh crisp linen and appeared as though they have never been used before. Was astounded to hear that the lodge has been open for some years as it comes across as though it only opened yesterday.

I would highly recommend the facility for any conferences as the location and activities also added to office team building. Unlike other conference events where people disappear of an evening we spent the evening socialising with other attendees and therefore found discussions from the day continued to the evening with most of the solutions being done at the dinner table.

Thanks for a great experience and keep up the great work blue zebra we will certainly be back.

Thank you so much for your wonderful and detailed review!

We are very excited about the Hornbill Conference Centre and as one of the first we hosted, we're thrilled to hear your feedback. We have since developed the facilities to include a lounge area on the top level where the pool table is, with a work station and flexibility to use the additional space as required by the group. We now comfortably seat 22 people, but can seat more if required.

Great to hear that your group will be back. We'll be in touch with updated conference packages and look forward to hosting your team in the future. It'll be interesting to see which special guests join you next time - possibly a Bush Baby or Red Duiker (although they're a lot more shy than some of the birds)!

My husband and I visited Blue Zebra in mid-February, 2018.

After reading a few dramatic reviews mentioning wading to the boat, our particular experience was a bit of a let-down-- the water came only to my calves, and there was a little step ladder, so boarding was very easy.

The resort was generally stunning. Everything looked new, elegant and in very good condition. (We were told that some work was done while the resort was closed in January.) There are a lot of great places with nice views to sit and relax. We enjoyed taking our books and drinks and trying out all the different spots. We also enjoyed the short, scenic hike around the island. Birds and jewel-toned lizards provide constant wildlife watching.

The food was really good and very plentiful. The fish tacos and chocolate mousse were my favorites. The bar was also very good, especially with classic cocktails like gin and tonics or margueritas.

The pool was very nice and clean, with excellent, breezy views.

We stayed in the Kingfisher executive safari tent. It felt very clean, airy, and chic, with a large stone feature in the bathroom. The views were great. The only problem was that the side of the island we were on got little breeze, and the lake can be quite hot during summer. A small battery powered fan for the bed would go a long way toward making it more comfortable at night during the hot summer. Tip: keep the lights off as much as possible after dark to minimize bugs in the tent-- some are small enough to make it through both the tent screens and bednet, but they won't bother if the lights are out.

One other downside to visiting in the summer was the increased river run-off into the lake, which makes the water a bit clowdy and increases the risk of crocodiles. We were advised not to swim due to crocodile sightings.

We are very much looking forward to visiting again, and will try to come in winter when it is cooler and the water is clearer and crocodile-free.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay! We're so glad that you have since returned & thank you for bringing your friends along to experience our island getaway.

May is always a lovely time to visit and we hope you noticed the difference in lake clarity and general climate. We are working on ventilation and fans for the next summer period (especially October), although the lodge will be closed from mid-Jan to mid-Feb. We do make sure to advice guests about the heat and our set-up when booking.

We just love the intro to this review! We do appreciate that some find the boarding a little tedious and are looking into an alternative option at the moment, but are very happy to hear your realistic feedback about previous mentions :)

Hopefully we'll see you again soon - will be sure to have chocolate mousse on the menu when you visit, although you'll have to try the fondant too. Please feel free to pass any feedback our way of your recent stay. Always looking for ways to improve where we can.

Zikomo Elizabeth!
