Description: Step aboard Sailing Barge Hydrogen on Maldon's Hythe Quay and enjoy a tearoom experience whilst supporting Cooks Barge Yard and this historic vessel. Hydrogen was built in 1906 as a cargo carrier and joined a fleet that once numbered over 2,000 strong. Today she earns her keep as a National Historic Ship, offering sailing cruises from Maldon and Ipswich. Over the winter months, she will be open as an unusual tearoom, serving lovely homemade food supplied by Maldon businesses. Whilst on board you can learn more about the Hydrogen and also Cooks Barge Yard on the Quay, established in 1894 and still used for barge repairs today. Profits from the tearoom will go back to helping maintain the Hydrogen and keeping her afloat and in good condition for the future.

Our daughters bought us an afternoon tea on the barge Thistle as one of our Christmas presents. We went this afternoon to take up this offer and couldn't believe how much there was to eat! The sandwiches were lovely and fresh, Victoria sponge, fruit cake, chocolate fudge cake and enormous scones with jam and cream. All so moist and tasty and accompanied by unlimited cups of tea served by lovely friendly staff. We thoroughly enjoyed it all and would highly recommend this experience.

Excellent and atmospheric snug spot for a rewarding scone or toasted tea cake after a chilly stroll. Pots of tea were brought to the table almost immediately and our food was fresh and tasty. Lots of barge history visible and good heating. The loo is a bit of a puzzle as to how to flush- bit of a clue as to what part to press would be a good idea? Our visitor was defeated by that but delighted with the visit nevertheless.
