“Great Villa with Pool in Piedmonte”

We were a large group of family and friends- 5 families with a total of 14 people, including 4 kids/teens- and this villa was perfect for our week in Piedmonte. It's an authentic Italian villa that has been well maintained and is clearly a cherished family home. It's well built, clean and nicely furnished, with artwork and other nice touches throughout the home. It has terra cotta tile floors, vaulted ceilings with wood beams, beautiful wood doors, and lots of windows. It's not fancy or modern, but it's elegant in a traditional sense.

It's very large and spacious- even with all 14 of us in one room, it never felt crowded. The layout of the house is great. We tended to congregate in the kitchen in the mornings and down by the pool later in the day. The kids enjoyed hanging out in the small room off to the side of the dining area, and there were many rooms/spaces that we never even used. The bedrooms are well placed and allowed each family lots of privacy. There are essentially 3 different bedroom areas on the top floor and then another set of bedrooms on the ground floor. When in our room, we never even heard anyone in the other rooms thanks to the thick walls, the heavy doors and the abundance of space.

We enjoyed eating on the patio behind the main house, as well as down by the pool. The grounds are even more spacious than the main house. There is a full size pool, as well as several patios and outside lounging areas, full kitchen, shower and bathrooms, sauna, soccer/tennis court, ping pong table, tree swing, hammock, and expansive lawn.

The location of the villa is also great. Fontanile is very small , with just one bar-cafe, a large church, vineyards everywhere, and that's about it. However, there are hilltop villages nearby in whichever direction you look. During our stay, we enjoyed a visit to Berta Grappa Distillerie (just 5 minutes away), a day in Turin, lunch in Bra (Boccandivino), a guided day tour of the Barolo and Barbaresco wine regions (Piedmont Food and Wine), and dinner in Mombaruzzo (La Malalera Osteria). Mostly, though, we enjoyed relaxing at the villa, by the pool.

The villa would make an ideal base for triathlon training or cycling. The pool is large enough for laps and the many small, hilly roads made for nice mornings runs. Wifi was sufficient, those who needed to did some work in the evenings, the kids played online and watched movies, etc.

The owners of the home, Alessandro and his brother Andrea, live in the property next door and were very helpful. One of the people in our group lost their car keys and Andrea helped them by making multiple calls to the rental company and then driving him to Alessandria to file a report and request a second set of keys. They quickly responded to minor issues throughout the week, and Alessandro actually went to the bakery on our first morning and brought us fresh bread for breakfast. They also have a small dog that the children enjoyed playing with.

We could have easily stayed another week and would gladly return.

“Without doubt a place to go back to and recommend without hesitation”
Reviewed 4 August 2013 for a stay in July 2013

After starting this review several times, I have realised I am only repeating what is available on the web. My additions are the following:
While there are spaces for a large group to be together - both kitchens, dining areas etc, this place is full of quiet corners, inside and out , where it is easy to find a place for yourself. Lounges - (plural), hammocks outdoors, comfortable outdoor furniture in quiet spots in the garden. After a week together with 16 people, noone felt crowded out.
The management was friendly, helpful, yet non-invasive. Elastic and accomodating and this made it possible for everybody in this large group to have such a good time. We cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Liked best: setting, relaxed yet refined taste in decor, facilities, garden, swimming pool, management style
Liked least: The steepness of descent to the swimming pool - oldies would appreciate a staired path ....

“Beautiful secluded villa in the Monferrato Hills”

I came to this villa for a week in July this year. The owner is a very kind lady who cooks amazing food upon request, and is very knowledgeable about the local area (places to eat, drink, shop, sights etc). The location is hidden away in the beautiful hills near the small town of Nizza Monferrato. There is a pool and tennis court, and a nice big garden to enjoy.

You can drive 1 or so hours to get to the sea near Genova and the small beautiful port of Portofino. Driving in the other direction about 1 1/2 hours you will reach Milan which is also a beautiful city.

I would highly recommend this villa - well worth a stay!
