There is good and not so with this place
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 30 Sept 2012
The resort is in a fantastic position if you like to be in the thick of it. Central Chaweng is just out the front and it made for easy access to shopping and dining options. It is large and has a variety of room options. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. I have no complaints whatsoever about the quality. There are a few signs of 'ageing' but nothing to complain about for the star rating of the place. We saw a few different room options during our stay. I would rate it as a three and a half to four star place. The service was very good in all aspects of the resort. We had a beautiful dinner at Red Snapper one night and the meal was absolutely delicious and well priced for a 'higher priced' dining option. I would thoroughly recommend it. The pool areas were great. We preferred the quieter middle pool area as we were a group of three women travelling without kids! Loved the cocktails daily during happy hour and the fresh fruit and corn straight from the beach at lunch time. I had a massage in the spa and it was great too.

The negative: There are a few and all relating to overbooking and their late check out policies. Due to offering "My Time" customers and higher category rooms a late check out time, this pushes back the time guests can check in and results in rooms not being available. The flow over result of this and also it would appear the fact that they overbook the hotel leaves some guests very disgruntled. We were placed in a different category room on our first night because of this and whilst it was a lower priced room it was actually better than the Premier Room we had booked and ended up in. Meeting and chatting to guests throughout our stay, we discovered that rooms not being available upon check in and having to change room categories was a common theme. I can see that this is especially the case during peak times (like Australian school holidays) and when there are large groups of people staying together. Essentially though, it didn't really bother us too much. I was annoyed at first, but they compensated us adequately and the room was perfectly fine for the one night we were in it (as a party of three we felt that it was a better room than the Premier rooms which were meant to be bigger and better). The resort needs to reassess it's check in/check out times and also stay on top of overbooking and it would be a great place to stay. I can see how other people would become very angry about it (those with less tolerance for some inconvienience) but most people just got on with having a fun holiday!

Positives - very central location, right in the thick of Chaweng, beautiful gardens - very well established and maintained. Polite and courteous staff. Great breakfasts, bad coffee. You are charged extra for ordinary espresso.

Negatives - very tierd Resort and very tierd rooms. We were upgraded to a Deluxe Room. Ground floor - with spa and semi open bathroom. Rooms are very dark, and if you open the curtains fully - you're on show the rest of the resort. Bed linen was thread bare, Water pressure ordinary. I would rate the room at 3.5 star.

Further Negatives - and certainly not the fault of the hotel. My fellow travellers were Australian and English bogans. Most of them it would appear were first time travellers. Just ignorant and rude and sometimes quite disrespectful to the staff. You could here them coming by the flip flop of their flip flops. You have been warned. Comes with the territorty of staying in Chaweng.

Tip - for a really lovely, romantic and civilised night cap, walk down to The Library, lounge on a bean bag, have a drink and pudding by candle light. Perfect. Away from the noise and all the bogans. Great swimming beach down here, 100% better than out front of Chaweng Regent.

A very big resort in the heart of chaweng beach. Good location and attractive hotel. Many other hotels in the area look very rundown
Pros -
Good pools and beach
Great location
Family friendly resort - they love kids and there is lots of activities for kids.

Cons
Bad service - most staff speak very little or no English. The guy on the omelette station at breakfast was really rude as we're most pool attendants. Even some staff on reception don't speak English. Considering most people who stay here speak English this is important. We had a lot of trouble communicating.
Large jet planes fly over very low and noisy during the day
Resort is very big not good if you want peace and quiet. You have to get up at 6am to bag a sun lounge.
lots of kids splashing and 'bombing' in the pool. Despite the rules of no jumping no one stopped this.
Breakfast pretty average - not many tables so get here early.
Wifi really slow and expensive
Beds are REALLY hard, impossible to sleep
Noisy at night with all the fireworks
Room cleaning very average
not enough free water, considering you can't drink it

We stayed in a double deluxe, it was very spacious but the bathroom was all glass, lucky it is just my husband but a little weird. Flat screen tv.
Apparently lower grade rooms are pretty bad.
We are still hereso no doubt I'll add more to this review!

Room tip: Get somewhere on the left side of the hotel (facing the beach) and an upstairs one if you like privacy.

I only returned from the Chaweng beach resort yesterday having spent the last nine days there after a trip to Hong Kong.On arrival at the front desk everything looks very good but it takes a little time before the cracks start appearing. We were allocated room 406 on arrival as we had gone for the spa villa, we were given a cold towel and a glass of iced tea in reception then we were shown to our room, which was a little distance from reception. After following the receptionist to the room we went in only to be confronted by a power cut which then righted itself after a couple of minutes, stood in the pitch black was not the best first impressions we got, dont worry there were more power cuts to follow as the days went by. Again as mentioned by previous reviewers we were then left in the room not knowing where we were in relation to the pool, the dining room or other amenities, she was to engrossed in explaining the rules of the mini bar and that we got two bottles of water per day then left us to unpack and try to orientate ourselves around the resort, not bad at 9pm at night in the dark. Anyway we managed.
The room itself was lovely, very spacious, plenty of storage, slippers, bath robe and flip flops provided for you in your room. The bathroom was quite big with a power shower on the inside and a spa bath on the outside in an enclosed area. The other half being very technically minded soon mastered the electric panel next to the bed so she was happy. There was a flat screen TV attached to the wall, fridge and safe all in the room.
Breakfast the next morning was quite an adventure when we found the dining area, again as previously mentioned in other reviews there are 3 areas which we found out later. We were sat in an area next to the Red Snapper bar (review to follow), we then helped ourselves to cereal and juice and the staff were very good with tea/coffee, we then went to get toast we had to go to the toaster in the entrance hall where you found an assortment of breads/preserves. If you then wanted to have a hot breakfast you then had to go into another room where there was hot food laid out in steamers, cold meats, salads and an egg station where the chef will make eggs of your choice fried/scrambled/poached/omelletes. On returning to the table through two rooms i found the waiter already clearing our table as though we had finished, talk about quick off the mark. As it was daylight we then went for a wonder around the hotel grounds, the lake with the Koi Carp is great, we found the two pools, beach bar and chom talay restaurant, we even found the shops located upstairs near reception for what good they were( nothing much of interest to be had). Time then to go to the reps meeting (Tony from Thomas Cook) we met a lovely couple who like us had arrived the night before and were on their honeymoon, congratulations Jill and Sam from Ballymena (hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday and the ladyboys), anyway the rep was useless and both of us decided not to go on any of the un interesting tours that he had to offer. That was that.
The hotel itself is lovely in a great location on the beach and main road the staff cannot do enough to help you and are always friendly, that is until you encounter a problem. The lads that run the towel stand down by the beach and the beach bar staff were fantastic, good snacks and drink to be had through the day and then happy hour 3-4 buy one get one free. Even so the price is quite a lot dearer than you paid down the street in the ample bars and eateries that are well within walking distance.
After a couple of days we then enquired about keeping our room on when we check out for a couple of hours on our last day only to be told there was nothing they could do until our departure date, fair enough keep trying closer to the date, still no joy. On the date of departure straight after breakfast asked again only to be told no you cant keep the room, why, if they knew they were fully booked not tell people earlier, this now meant we had 7hours from lunchtime with no access to a shower or anywhere to change clothes for travelling so we had to make do with the public toilets near to reception (not acceptable or suitable)
The only other downside of the holiday was the fact that workmen had entered our room without our knowledge to repair/replace a tile in the spa area of the bathroom. We only found this out when we went to use the bath, unfortunately we couldnt as there was broken tiles scattered all around the area and in the bath. When i went to reception to speak to a manager i felt like i was the one being grilled by the reception staff as to why i wanted a manager. Anyway a manager arrived and i got her to escort me to the room as she couldnt really understand what i wanted to see her for. on seeing the mess she was absolutely distraught and when i mentioned that it would be on trip advisor she soon sent 4 members of staff to tidy it up. All in all the hotel is of a very good standard but i think the managers/staff should try to break down the language barriers with guests.

Room tip: look around first before organising trips with reps. Use the 7/11 store outside the hotel for you goods

Stunning hotel right on the beach, close to shopping, nightlife, restuarants and bars. Huge selection at breakfast. Two swimming pools one with swim up pool bar. We had booked the spa villa but on arrival were upgraded to the royal suite, it was STUNNING. Couldn't have asked for a better 40th birthday. The staff were super friendly and well organized. If your thinking of staying here, think no more. It's unbeatable.

Room tip: Spa villa is unbeatable. Sure to please the fussiest traveller.

Just loved this resort !!!
This was a holiday organized for my 50th birthday[ which was 4 years ago ] with family and friends, and have decided to write a review after reading some existing ones .
Firstly we couldnt have been treated any better, upon arrival there was a big banner right across the front entrance wishing me a happy birthday, then when l got to my room l also had flowers to welcome us , on my actual birthday l got a lovely cake and champagne which the staff brought to my room. The staff, the whole week made such a fuss of myself and our group l felt very spoilt, the personal attention we got was unreal.
Yes they do have mossies which your room gets sprayed every night for.
We recently came back to koh samui and my daughter stayed at this resort so l was very interested in seeing if things were different , l can honestly say she was still very impressed at how much personal attention the staff give her even though there is a language barrier.
The only downfall thet she could say was that you have to walk up the beach a bit to get good swimming spot.
I certainly wont hessitate to stay at this lovely resort again .
