Having enjoyed the experience so much last year we decided to revisit the Amari Palm Reef with our friends again this year. We were not disappointed. From check-in to our departure two weeks later we were never less than impressed by the friendliness, courtesy and general efficiency of all the Amari staff with whom we came into contact. For its atmosphere, value for money and great dining experience we highly recommend the beach buffet/barbeque. Equally impressive, and offering comparably high standards, is Amari's Italian restaurant 'Prego', which is situated across the road from the hotel's beachside complex; it is extremely popular and booking is strongly advised.

After the bustle and bright lights of Singapore, we found the Amari to be an oasis of peace and tranquility and can't wait for our next visit.

We spent two weeks at the Amari Hotel. From our check in to departure we had a great time. Our de-luxe room was situated on the second floor overlooking the gardens. The room was well furnished with a well designed bathroom. The situation was very peaceful and quiet. The walk to breakfast was approximately 5minutes which was no hardship at all.( could be "interesting" if it was raining hard as much of the walk is in the open! Umbrellas are supplied in the rooms.)
Once arriving at breakfast, an excellent array of food was on offer, with the usual selection of juices, fruit, cereals. Hot choices of eggs, bacon, sausages etc.Whilst on the subject of food, a couple of evenings a week the hotel puts on themed evenings on the beach such as barbecues or Thai evenings. These are not cheap compared with eateries in the surrounding area but the quality is very high. (See reviews of restaurants in the relevent section)
The location of the Hotel is at the quite end of Chaweng, with shops, bars and restaurants accessible by walking for about 5 minutes. In the evening we found walking along the beach far easier than threading our way on the rather uneven pavements to get to where we wanted to go. The choice of eateries on the beach and in the town is excellent.
We hired a car from the hotel for a couple of days and had great fun exploring the island, especially in the south which is sleepy and interesting.
This Hotel is relaxing, well run, and completely unstuffy, The staff are polite, friendly and not pushy.
We were very fortunate whilst staying here as we met some interesting guests of many nationalities who were well travelled like ourselves which made for fun conversations in the bar during happy hour and whilst cooling off in the pool.
All in all a great time at the Amari Reef Hotel.

Had to write this after the last negative review, which I simply don't understand. We previously stayed at a 5 star on Samui and found this hotel to be just as good. The breakfast buffet was good and we were certainly asked if we wanted tea of coffee as soon as we sat down. All staff are helpful, cheerful and respectful. There is happy hour each evening, details on display in the bar. We stayed at a deluxe room by the garden pool and found it really great, spacious and quiet with a good sized bathroom. We have considered returning and would ask for the same room.
Yes the garden pool is quiet but that is what some want. The pool by the beach is busier with a good lunchtime and drinks service if you want it. Alternatively, a few steps onto the beach you will find the guys selling cold drinks (40p), beer (90p), corn and pineapple (£1.20 each). A few steps to the right and you will find bbq satay for sale. A few hundred yards to the left on the beach you can find a great massage for £5.
We tried the Thai beach buffet and although the experience was great the food could have had more options in our opinion. In the evening you can go left along the beach to find a string of beach restaurants that are great value. Along the main road we liked Rice, Red Snapper and the hotels Prego restaurant. Get the red dining guide and you can find some hidden gems that you will not find yourself. Best for us was the Beach Club at Buri Rasa. A tiny beachside restaurant with great steak and seafood.
Overall I would not hesitate to recommend the Amari Palm Reef at all.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms by the garden pool are very nice and a great location

You are probably thinking there is always someone who wants a moan, but having reviewed many good hotels, including the excellent Amari in Phuket, this is the first time that I have felt the need to put forward a very negative review. our experience would not sem to match most of the other reviews, which we researched extensively prior to booking this hotel. We had also based our decision on having stayed at the Amari Coral Beach in Phuket last year - a fine hotel well run and managed.
The Palm Reef however was a huge disappointment, and we were grateful to check out after 2 days and transfer to another hotel, the Bo Phut hotel resort and spa, which is a complete and positive contrast to the Amari. We had booked a de-luxe room with garden view rather than the smaller standard room on the beach side of the resort.
Our experience included the following, which left us with a strong impression that this hotel is being used as a cash cow by Amari, who are simply not re-investing the profits they are making in the fabric of the hotel. The only other conclusion we can come to is that it is very poorly managed.
On arrival were checked in and then kept waiting as another couple had arrived after us and were checking in, but we were told it would be easier to take us all across the road together so we had to wait. Easier for who?
Prior to arrival we had e-mailed the hotel to request a double bed rather than a twin with a bed cover. This was acknowledged but on arrival we were given a room with twin beds and told that it was the last available room in the resort, and it was not possible to put a double bed in the room.
The room itself had dinted and scratched furniture with one cabinet door loose on its hinges, and the floor was also badly scratched. We were told that all the rooms had the same standard of furniture, so no alternative could be offered.
The outside balcony area was contaminated with bird poo, including on the table and chairs. The handrail around the balcony was filthy and the varnish peeling off.
The wardrobe had glass door handles, one of which had been crudely glued together with exposed sharp edges evident.
The aircon was just working, but very poorly.
these issues were brought up with the reception team who sorted out the aircon and the housekeeping team cleaned the bird poo off the table and seats, but not off the surrounding wooden panels. There was nothing more that could be done in terms of changing rooms or even upgrading, as the hotel was full. But no-one from the management team bothered to come and review the complaints with us in the room or offer to resolve them. We were told there was nothing they could do.
Were we unfortunate? Possibly. Could the management habve resolved the problem if they had genuinely cared? Almost certainly.
we managed to transfer to another hotel, but taking our room issue aside, we were also able to make comparisons not only with other hotels but aslo with the Amari in Phuket. Our observations are as follows:
The breakfasts were nicely presented and the quality good, but the service levels were appalling, and the coffee was an instant, almost undrinkable concoction. That could only be tried after numerous attempts to catch a waiters attention to ask for some. Having waited to be shown to a table and seated it is usual then for a waiter to ask whether you would like tea or coffee. Not in this hotel.
At the pool nearest to the deluxe rooms across the road from reception, there is no pool bar, and it was only if you were lucky to catch a waiter that you could ask him to scuttle across the road for something to drink. a missed profit opportunity there Amari (sorry for the sarcasm).
The hotel location is stated as being only ten minutes from the airport. this should perhaps have alerted us to a possible noise issue, but all the reviews of the hotel are so positive and we had seen none mentioning aeroplane noise. The hotel is pretty much adjacent to the take off runway of the airport, so from the first plane at around 6 am you get the blast of thunder as a plane tears down the runway. At least you dont get noise from the incoming planes which come in from the opposite direction.
we expected Chaweng to be the usual Asion chaos, and having been to Phuket we were prepared for it. However, in comparison Chaweng is scruffier, dirtier and at times even noisier including huge boom boxes on the beach were 2pm to 2am parties take place. if you want a boozy, backpacker holiday then it will be fantastic. If not, dont stay in Chaweng.
And most certainly dont stay at the Amari Palm Reef which is a disgrace to the Amari brand. Amari I know have some great hotels and are a quality company, but they need to sort this one out. Don't go.
