“Well equipped apartment with exotic bedroom”
Reviewed 6 February 2013 for a stay in January 2013

This comfortable apartment is in a great (possibly the best) area of Valle Gran Rey. The steps up to it are steep, to say the least, but the climb is worth it as the front door opens onto a spacious living and kitchen area. The kitchen part is modern, functional and well equipped with toaster, oven, 4 ring hob, kettle and a range of pots, pans and utensils that made self catering easy and straightforward. In my experience apartments equipped to this standard are rare in this area, although there was no microwave. The rest of the living room was well furnished with a large kitchen table for dining, a smaller table by the window and a corner settee. It is very light and airy. The shower room is small but perfectly adequate and nicely equipped and decorated.

The bedroom was beautifully done with a large brass bed and interesting lights and decorations. There are loads of wardrobe space and place to store your luggage. The whole apartment feels very comfortable. It had a very exotic feel to it thanks to the use of unusual fittings and curtains.

There is a roof terrace with loungers and great views over other roof tops to the sea. There is a laundry room up there which is an absolute boon if you're on a walking holiday and needing fresh clothes every day.

It claims to sleep 4 and I suppose the settee converts to a bed - didn't try that so can't comment. The living area is big enough for 4 people but there could be an issue with wardrobe space and luggage storage if 4 stayed. I suppose cases could be stored up in the laundry room which is certainly big enough.

My only criticism is that, despite there being two umbrellas on the roof terrace, there were no bases so we couldn't use them. Apart from that it was great.

“Great flat, great location - and a great English-speaking host. Just right.”

Casa Emma is a charming apartment, in what we felt was the most charming part of Valle Gran Rey in western Gomera.
The journey across the island is an experience in itself - and when we reached the apartment the owner Emma was there to meet us. After bringing us a couple of beers, Emma answered all our questions about the area, from vegetarian-friendly restaurants to local walks and the best things to do. (Never underestimate the advantage of an English-speaking host!)
There was some construction work going on down in the valley beneath the apartment - although this really could only have bothered us if we'd spent all day every day in the apartment, Emma had already told us about this before we booked and offered a small discount. Very honest and extremely helpful.
We were on La Gomera to 'get away from it all', and this was just the right spot. The two other town areas near the sea (Playa and Vueltas ) are that bit more commercial with new shops and quite a few low-rise hotels. La Calera is a 5-10 minute walk up the hill, but it is so much more charming.
There's a great mini-supermarket opposite the building, so you should never run of anything important - and there are at least three or four good restaurants nearby, a couple with stunning sunset views.
We'd definitely recommend La Calera, and Casa Emma.

Liked best: The apartment was well-appointed and charmingly decorated. Emma has added those extra touches which make all the difference.
Liked least: There are a lot of steps down, and more importantly up, to La Calera. But they're worth it.

“Great apartment, great location”
Reviewed 24 February 2012 for a stay in February 2012

We loved our week-long stay at Casa Emma. The apartment is clean, bright and cheerful. The sun roof is wonderful. There is a small supermarket just across the road from the apartment, a pharmacy and local restaurants are just minutes away. There are two larger towns nearby, so there are plenty of choices for shopping and eating out. Emma is very easy going and she looked after us very well. We wanted for nothing during our stay.

“A lovely village apartment”
Reviewed 17 February 2012 for a stay in February 2012

Like others have said this was a lovely apartment with an exceptionally comfortable large bed and very well equipped. It was a nice surprise to see that there was a water filter fitted which meant that we didn't need to buy water. Also it was enjoyable to stay in a village that was a good mix of locals and holidaymakers mainly there for the walking. The supermarket nearby was open long hours, well stocked and it was good to get fresh brown rolls and croissants every morning. The apartment owner was very caring and ensured that we had everything we needed. . Looking forward to going back next year.
