My husband and I stayed at the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, the room was small and the layout of the bathroom interesting but it had character, wonderful views and the food good.
We stayed at a number of hotels in Turkey but this was the most memorable because of its atmosphere and the feeling that you were really experiencing the culture of the region. Would definitely stay there again.

I agree to a few of other travellers saying that this hotel is very difficult to rate. It looks very authentic when you enter, transformed from on old mansion into a hotel. And it is supposed to be the best hotel in the small town of Mardin. Then however the rooms were lousy in decoration, our toilet was actually in the part of the tiniest bathroom separated by a the sliding shower door and the toilet paper roll was fixed ontop of the sink... It was raining badly when we arrived and 2 of the 3 bedrooms became flooded by the rain. The breakfast wasnt anything special. so what can I say... yes it might be the best in town, who knows, but it is rather 3 stars and lacks service and quality.

This one is a mixed bag. The building is fabulous and this could be one of those very expensive boutique hotels... but isn't. How do you rate a place where some things are 6 star and some are 2 star? 6 star building, 2 star bathroom, 3,5 star bedroom. Receptionist that speaks ZERO English, the list goes on. I paid around 60 euros and after several weeks haven't yet decided if I paid too much or if it was ok.

The hotel is in the typical Mardin architecture with lovely warm coloured stone that has been beautifully carved. My guide told me that the Turkish president stayed there last year. I had a smallish room with stone walls, a large double bed and a padded bed head. There was a mini-bar fridge and a table but no other furniture in the room - not that there was room for any! The shower room was long and narrow but other than that perfectly functional (apart from the mothballs in the sink which stank out the room!). But my friend's room had the loo/toilet in the shower cubicle so each time she went to the loo her feet got soaking wet because the shower hadn't drained properly! There was no TV but there was free wifi. The hotel was quite near the main high street in town so it didn't take too long to walk anywhere. I had been tempted to stay at the Zinciriye but they were full. It's up at the top near the islamic school/medrase so presumably means climbing a huge flight of stairs each time which might get quite tiring. Breakfast was the usual Turkish flat breads, spreads, halva, fruits and vegetables. The coffee was rather nasty instant coffee which was disappointing.

The hotel has lots of character and each of the rooms seems to be unique. They can vary widely in size and amenities, and even though ours was on the small side, the bed was quite comfy, the bathroom was clean with plenty of hot water and fluffy towels, and it had a nice atmosphere. The staff didn't speak much English; it seems that they cater mainly to tourists from within Turkey. They were able to help us arrange a cab to the airport and figure out how to get to the bus station to visit a neighboring town. The breakfast had a lot of variety and the dinner we at there was a very good value for the quality and quantity of food we got. The only downside is that it's on the very edge of the old city, so you have to walk uphill to get back into town.
