The directions to the 'factory' are somewhat hazy but a very friendly local bank official jumped into our car and showed us where to go....and that's a feature of the area - unfettered friendliness from all we met. There is a very rocky lane leading to the location so, if you want to maintain a working sump, drive with care. Our hosts Stefanie and Pepe were brilliant - nothing was too much bother and they didn't complain despite us using them more as a hotel than a B&B! The accommodation was clean and functional, the bathroom well supplied with all the bits and pieces you might need. Stefanie clearly loves the local area and it's history and works sometimes as a local guide...very informative and interesting. The food was not especially to my liking as I like red meat and all the trimmings, but if you like healthy food this is the place to be. Pedro is an ex professional maitre d' and a dab hand in the kitchen. Even tho' it was February we still managed to enjoy an hour or two in the garden overlooking the pool....I can imagine that during 'the season' the gardens would be full of colour and very relaxing. In the house there is an intimate dining area and a very pleasing living-room for the guests to relax in front of a nice log fire. Outside is a fascinating walk along the river and the man-made channel built to enable the old munitions factory to function. Jimena de la Frontera itself is an historic area, the principal feature of which is an ancient castle on a promontory overlooking the town. The current 'top' local restaurant is run by the inimitable Louis....there are several restaurants in the town but everyone currently directs enquirers to Louis' place. It wasn't brilliant in my view but I ate what I was given, including some rather too chewy calamari, and enjoyed the experience overall. My wife and I went to the area looking for somewhere to move to in Spain and thought Jimena would be the place, it certainly meets the needs of numerous ex-pats but would be too quiet for us. We asked Pedro's advice and he recommended Alcaidesa links golf resort - we visited immediately and found precisely what we were looking for.....an enormous apartment with the front balcony overlooking a nice pool and the rear the eighteenth green of the golf course - fabulous. We strongly recommend visiting the munitions factory which can be summed up by saying: fantastic hosts, good healthy food produced from local ingredients, and surrounded by a very interesting historical area.
The hosts Stefania and Pedro were very friendly and informative about Jimena and the history of the former Fabrica de bombas (Royal Artillery Factory). The property is beautiful and offers high level of comfort and a very relaxed atmosphere. Dinner was excellent and so was the breakfast with local fruit products. Location is great for a nice walk around Jimena de la Frontera and along the canal to the old Castillo on top of the hill.
