“Nice Stay in Tobermory, but with Pros and Cons”
Reviewed 26 September 2014 for a stay in May 2014

We stayed at Ethan's Escape for a weekend in May and enjoyed touring Tobermory and Flower Pot Island. The cottage stay had both pros and cons:

Pros:
-Hosts were very responsive to e-mail inquiries and answered any questions we had. Booking process was easy and all correspondence with the hosts were friendly.
-Accommodations are pet friendly, which was great for our little dogs.
-Nice view and centrally located, with ample parking.

Cons:
-Cottage appeared older than what we expected based on the photos.
-Lots of bugs outside of the house and also already inside the house when we arrived, so we had to spend a lot of time swatting mosquitoes. I would suggest providing some sort of mosquito repeller as it was really hard to go outside and use the BBQ/firepit due to the overwhelming amount of bugs.
-Kitchen is in need of an update, as well as windows, and some sort of window covering in the shower...

With a bit of renovating, I would consider to stay here again and recommend to friends, as the location was very convenient and the cottage was well equipped.

“Will not return”

First impression when we walked inside was....dirty. There were crumbs on the kitchen counter, dog hair on leather couch, dust on bottom shelf of coffee table and master night tables. Rug around toilet was wet??? Bathroom faucet dirty. Bar area in basement had the oder of vomit which dissipated after a day. I needed to clean before we started to unpack and was required to clean again at the end of our vacation. Also lots of insects inside cottage due to screens being in poor condition.

Paddle boat was fun but water at back of cottage is just a small shallow area. Can not get out into larger bay. Lots of activities in garage for our use. Bikes, archery, badminton rackets etc.

Lots of firewood available & propane tanks were full. BBQ is in rough condition.

Cottage located in central area to explore Bruce & Tobermory. Cottage supplied with most kitchen amenities, electronics (DVD, TV & old laptop) and Wifi. Cell reception is very limited.

“A Nice Place”

My husband, 2 year old daughter, and myself stayed at Ethan's Escape and really enjoyed it. It's a great location if you're looking to get away from major cities. The paddle boat was great, we just wish we had more lake access! The water depth was perfect for our daughter. She's 36 inches and she could easily stand in the water to splash and play. The kayaks are definitely only for single riders. I tried to put her on my lap, but it didn't work out!

We enjoyed the beautiful sunsets! We also heard coyotes howling one night! Cool to hear, but I went back in the house after that.

The house is spacious and offers two separate living spaces. Each living space is detached from the other one (connected by two separate stairs through the garage).

Only downside was that the beds were a little uncomfortable. If you like a firm mattress, you will think they are great. I prefer pillow top mattresses, but luckily they had enough extra pillows so I just laid those on the bed and slept on top of those. Problem solved.

Also make sure you check every nook and cranny of the house! They have pack 'n plays already at the cabin, as well as, telescopes for star gazing (you will see many stars!) and binoculars for animal/wildlife/bird watching. I also loved the 4 rabbits that seemed to visit the property daily. So cute! I also recommend bringing lots of bug spray for spending time outdoors.

“A real Canadian vacation”

I travelled with 2 young kids, my 17 yr old son and my 25 yr old nephew. We had just spent a hectic week in Toronto and Ethan's escape was just that, a relaxing escape from reality. It was so peaceful and laid back but never boring. Kids and big kids just loved the dock with the kayaks and pedal boat. Being from Scotland, it took a little adjusting to cottage/lake living ( mossies/spiders lol) but we soon overcame this :) Randy came over to say hi but was not at all intrusive and his wife Nancy was amazing with our booking from start to finish. A really nice couple and a pleasure to deal with. A short drive from cottage is singing sands beach, (nice and clean), for fresh bread, jam, pizza etc, there is an amazing little bakery not far down main road and you will find the most amazing fish and chips in Tobermory itself. We also took a trip on the speed boat at Tobermory, visited sauble beach (further south) and did some shopping at Owen Sound. The area, like the cottage is quiet and relaxing but still plenty to do. Our memories will last a lifetime of this trip. Oh and we just loved Canadian monopoly ;) x
