“Very interesting visit enhanced by friendly lock keeper and volunteers”

Bingley Five Rise Locks

We did not easy to find even though there were directional signs from Bingley. We parked near by on the street and walked the short distance to the locks. A major feat of engineering in 1774 when 30,000 people attended the opening.
It is a short walk down to the 3 locks and we were lucky to see boats using the locks which enabled us to understand how they worked.

After much discussion we decided to take a chance and go down these manned locks. I was met by a very friendly lock keeper (Miles) who assured us we would be fine. A high vis important person arrived in the shape of John assisted by the newbie Alex. They put us at ease, reassured us all the way down the 5 rise then the 3. They chatted, answered my millions of questions and gave us directions to a lovely pub for tea. We were met by John the following morning who let me ‘help’, chatted about music, books, history, wildlife and life in general. Soon joined by Miles again and thy got us back up the locks. A fabulous group of people who made us feel safe, important and welcome. Give it a go, it was brilliant !!!!

Decided on a walk along the canal and check out the locks, unfortunately no boats going through today but a nice relaxing stroll in the March sunshine

We went here in February this year and the the place was nice but the coffee shop was closed and we could not find anywhere to park.
In the summer I think it would be a good place to visit!

Lovely walk along the canal starting from Hirst Woods, Saltaire up through to Bingley 5 rise locks and stop at the cafe before turning back. Ample car parking at Hirst Woods and easy route, mostly flat mettled pathways, dog and cycle friendly. Around 5 miles altogether both ways. We went with friends (and our dog) very enjoyable afternoon at a relaxed pace.
