Happy Days Café, Chattel House Village, St. Lawrence Gap, Barbados

Mid-morning, and it was humid and hot. We’d left the car back at the Dover Practice Field (i.e. local park) to walk the St. Lawrence Gap because it’s a one-way-road and we were going the wrong way. In any case, a car is a liability on that stretch of road – there’s nowhere to park. Walking, of course, puts you at the mercy of the (friendly) hucksters sitting in the shade and trying to make a dollar or two with their tourist memorabilia. Mid-September and this is a quiet time for tourists; we had the ‘Gap’ largely to ourselves.

It was time for that mid-morning coffee break, only the majority places open were either restaurants gearing up for lunch or drinking bars - those that offered soft drinks and alcohol. Nothing wrong with either option, but that’s not what we were seeking; where were the bars that focused upon coffee/tea & brioche at this time of the day?

Just across the road from the prestigious Southern Palms Beach Hotel was a Chattel Village – collection of seven traditional Bajan shacks (i.e. chattel houses) re-built, painted and looking smart (unlike the majority you see locally) – of tourist shops. One of these was the Happy Days Café. It was round the back with a shaded seating area out front. There were a couple of tables occupied – people tucking into what appeared to be traditional English-style breakfasts – all those eggs, bacon & toast.

Ours, by contrast, was a pretty meagre order – one Coke (and two glasses please). Given the sun and the heat, we decided to go *cold* - a hot coffee was simply a ‘drink too far’. Mine host – a friendly Trinidadian – took the order and, in our brief exchange, we compared the merits of the different tourist destinations in the Windward Islands (and, for good measure) included Tobago & Barbados. Between us we sketched out a strategy into the next period – it was a lot to ask of one Coke.

It was a pleasant place to spend 20 minutes exchanging a few words, to explore the potential of the chattel houses village concept – providing a friendly market place with which to encourage the tourist away from his/her residential hotel - one that remains neutral to the surrounding accommodation. Stack the shops with quality products, clothes and artifacts, and that coffee shop becomes a catalyst for the economic development of the village. It may even replace the liquor bars that continue to dominate many small-scale tourist venues.

Well, that’s a considerable extrapolation from a single Coke (for which we paid BB$4.25) and a brief exchange, but it does provide an inkling into the importance of reviewing, revising and investing in those things that are essential for the long-term security of local tourist industries.

Next time we’ll come earlier and stick with breakfast.

We tried this place on our last day and could not have been more disappointed in ourselves! If you want a reasonably priced hot breakfast, with the friendliest service look no further!

I had bacon and eggs and my husband had french toast. The waitress was very attentive, our food came out pretty quickly and the area was very pleasant. It's set back from the road whereas some of the other places aren't, so it was a little quieter and more comfortable.

You'll only be disappointed here if you don't stop by on day one of your vacation :)
