Review Highlights
Pretty little building.

Cool, quiet, within the castle walls. Plain and unadorned interior with a famous religious painting.

Duomo di Castelfranco Veneto (The Cathedral of Castelfranco) is a classic catholic cathedral. Nothing out of the ordinary, bu they have a alter peice of Giogrione.

This 16th / 17th century building in classical Palladian style houses a great treasure - the only known example of an alter-piece by Giorgione, still housed here in his native city. The Madonna and Saints alter-piece is a remarkable work and shows the real talent of Giorgione - it is worth scrutinising closely just for its clarity and symbolism - although I'm afraid it is not shown off to its best advantage here, as it is confined to a small (and rather gloomy) side-chapel of the Cathedral, rather than being displayed in all its glory with good lighting. A pity therefore, but well worth the visit and viewing nevertheless.

I wouldn't drive out of my way, but if you are in Castelfranco and find parking near the civic clock tower I'd say stop in to visit the church. There's a collection of artwork and the duomo is impressive.

There aren't many paintings thought to certainly be by Giorgione and this small town has one of the best. It's his hometown which makes it even more special. Bit of a walk from
The railway station, particularly in the heat.
The Giorgione Madonna is in a side chapel - you might need to ask someone to open the chapel gate for you. The colour, fabric and light in this picture are astounding. Worth paying particular attention to the gorgeous red robes of the Madonna and the luminous patterned fabrics on which she sits. The soft hazy landscape background lends an atmosphere to the scene.
Worth investing extra time to stand and stare at this.
Also worth taking binoculars.
