The first time my Dylan, only 2 then saw the trees light up in the dead of night, as we slowly move up Cherating river in a ‘sampan’ on one of their fireflies excursions; she tightened her grip and said “Daddy look its Tinkerbell and her friends.” She was so thrilled. All wide eyed, full of wonder and amazement it was contagious.
The brilliant thing about these guys at Cherating is that they have somehow manage to summon the fireflies to the boat at will. They do this if I’m not mistaken, by flashing the trees with a dim torchlight that has a red filter on it a couple of times. This, we were told does not bring harm to the firefly population at all. The flashing red light apparently mimics the mating call of these insects. Triggering a natural response from any potential mate, attracting them to the source of the light.
It was magical.
