Had 2 weeks holiday in the makis September. My true opinion is overall a decent hotel , amazing service, clean hotel, room spot on ( shame about are balcony neighbours cost nothink to say good morning ignorant people) anyway food very nice and loads of it. The beach waiter who serves you all day what a guy amazing work done by him throughout the day. So overall the makis gets the thumbs up aswell as skala and the nice people so welcoming and warm. CHEERS, yamas. XXX.

No lifts. No entertainment. No evening meals served. Rooms clean, although dated. Skipped breakfast as nothing appealed unless a person likes mainly eggs & ham. A positive comment, if you're sunbathing on the beach opposite the hotel, the deck chair personnel will take your lunch/drinks order & collect from hotel bar for you.

Just returned from Skala in Kefalonia having stayed at the Makis Hotel. We booked and travelled through Tui, having done the same but to a different hotel in Skala 2 years ago.
Let's not beat about the bush here. This is a backwater resort with roads that resemble cart tracks and a journey from the airport to the resort that has more twists and turns in it than a ride on the Big One at Blackpool. Travel sickness on Kefalonian coach journeys is common. More about Skala in a minute.
The hotel is basic in all senses of the word. There's a lot of varnished wood all around the place which was OK back in 2003 when built, but it now looks it's age. Reception area is OK. It does what it says on the tin. We were greeted buy a somewhat brush young lady who coralled us new arrivals together and give us the 'welcome' speech. More of a lecture than a speech. The accommodation here is in blocks. There are ground floor and first floor in block 1, with ground, 1 and 2 floors in block 2. Stairs lead to upper floors. No lifts here! A large further block of 3 floors are apartments. We didn't look in side one but through open doors we could see a small kitchenette etc. Again stairs to upper floors.
We were in block 2 ground floor garden view. It was a good size room, king size bed that was hard, very hard. Previous reviews complain about the beds. I would echo those views. If you prefer soft and sumptuous to sleep on, best bring your own. In fairness, Re the room, there's nothing else to be degas I've about. Ensuit was good size, excellent shower and lots of hot water at anytime of the day. Some previous reviews have talked about intermittent water supplies. We didn't experience any problems. Shower areas are dated, back to 2003, but clean and fully functional. Plenty of wardrobe and cupboard space, all varnished, with a safe and a fridge also. No kettle etc but a hairdryer in the bathroom. I don't have hair so don't need it, but I do like tea, lots of tea so a minus point here from me.
Bar area is pretty large, lots of heavy wooden tables but patio chairs in metal frames and plastic wooden bases and backs making the chairs absolutely uncomfortable. The worst I have ever sat on. I'm a big guy so need a bit of comfort but these were gross! Snack food served til 5pm. Good selection and all cooked fresh. Excellent salads!! And in keeping with Greek tradition, they don't do small portions. Huge bowls and plates of food. Very reasonably priced too. Pool area is clean and a good size. Lots of pool side recliners available and in all this area is very nice.
Breakfast served upstairs in main building. No lift! 2 flights of stairs. Once up there you have a choice of seating areas, one inside and 2 outside. Breakfast is what you expect in this range of hotel. Second rate cereal, local breads, cocktail sausages and fried eggs, tinned fruit usually peaches of all things, plain yoghurt, 2 toasters that need a week to work out how to toast 2 slices of bread, how difficult can it be? Hot water for tea and coffee.
So why only 3 stars in this rating? Because that's all you get. It's no frills nothing fancy ticks a box kind of place. Yeah it needs some tlc. Yeah the beds are naff. Yeah the patio chairs are gross. Yeah you can't get any food after 5pm, not even a vending machine for a bar of chocolate. This place could be oh so much better than it is. It's got the location. Wow what a location. 50 yards to the beach. A great beach side service by a guy who spends all day back and forth to the bar for drinks and snacks etc. He works hard, very hard. It's got that wonderful relaxed atmosphere you only find in Greece.and that's the charm of this place. It says Greece, it sounds Greece, it looks Greece , it is Greece. Would I go back? We're on the website now looking at the same week next year.......!

Have stayed at various hotels in Skala over last ten years but first time at the Makis. Room was fine. Cleaned daily and a lovely enclosed shower with plenty of hot water. Air conditioning included and worked well if a little noisily at times. Breakfast is typically Greek and more than adequate just wish toasters worked. Could do with a proper commercial one. Beach area in front of hotel well appointed with duck boards and changing huts but too noisy with pumping Euro pop. Rather listen to the waves and burble of activity so went elsewhere. Didn't spend much time at the pool but seemed fine with plenty of sunbeds. A good pool bar with a good choice of food and drink. Staff friendly and helpful. Big issue which means that we sadly won't return, were the hard mattresses which meant didn't sleep properly for two weeks. Such a shame but can only speak as I found.

We enjoyed a fortnight here end of august/beginning of September.
The location of the Makis Hotel is perfect - a quiet road separates it from a sand and pebble beach and it is a short walk (uphill) to a good selection of tavernas and a few bars.
Sun beds on the beach are payable 7€. The sea is amazingly clear and you can see little fishes. Shoes are needed for getting into and out of the sea.
Our room had a double bed and a single. They were reasonably comfortable . Bedding and towels were changed twice a week. The bathroom was functional if a little tatty. The shower was nice and warm and the loo worked - what more could you need?
There was plenty of wardrobe space. There was no charge for the room safe or air conditioning.
We had a small furnished balcony. It was not at all private - but this can be seen in Tui photos. Being non-smokers time spent on the balcony was minimal as we seemed to be surrounded by people who virtually chain smoked on their balconies. In addition when we had our French doors open our room would become filled with smoke. Not a fault of the hotel - more inconsiderate smokers!
Breakfast comes as a buffet. The same every day but adequate.
The hotel offers food and drink menus served on the beach direct to your sunbed!
I always think of the beach as a quiet haven - but this was spoiled a bit by loud music being played on the beach via 2 large speakers. This would compete with equally loud music coming from the bar next door.
Kefalonia is a beautiful island. The people are friendly - love the way they are so family orientated!
This hotel is typically Greek. Simple and clean. A few little niggles but not enough to stop us possibly returning in the future. Holidays are what you make them.
