Rossella picked us up in Varenna for the ride up to the restaurant on a road we would never drive! The van was full (Canadians and Americans). We had the menu of the day, very enjoyable although we were starting to groan with the amount of food! Moreno finished it off with complimentary lemoncello. We totally enjoyed the experience and the two Canadians who sat next to us. It was a great way to spend the evening, and so different from the restaurants in town. Moreno is an excellent cook, we definitely recommend and would return on any visit to Varenna..... be sure to book in advance if you do not have a car!

This is a gem of a restaurant, up the hill. The food is tasty, the restaurant cozy, and the prices reasonable. The owners are lovely people, (the family's been in the business eight generations!!) and if you call and ask they'll pick you up in town and drop you home after dinner. It's an adventure worth having! Where else will the chef pick you up, tell you about his life, serve you an amazing dinner and take you home for 30 euro?! Definitely order the missoltini! Remember this is Italy - dinners are marvelously slow. Be prepared to share a ride with other diners (and to wait for them if you're too fast!)

We had booked this restaurant several days in advance. We had interrupted a cookery class by Moreno, the chef, and had given our details. Whilst nonchalantly dicing tomatoes in front of a gallery of Amierican tourists, and without a notebook or pen, he gave us the designated collection point and time at which his wife would meet us.
Sure enough, Moreno's wife came to meet us punctually that evening and with a smile. She glided around the many hairpin bends with ease until we were at Il Caminetto. Entering the restaurant we were embraced by the smells of Italy: herbs, cheeses, sauces, oils. If all of the other cafes and restaurants we had tried were stopping points on our culinary map then Il Caminetto was the destination on our culinary quest.
The atmosphere is relaxed and unfussed. A photo of
Moreno's ancestors takes pride of place on the wall reminding all visitors that the talents we are about to savour run in the blood, are part of the DNA of this kitchen.
Our meal was simple but sensational: pates, risotto, pasta and local fish. If we wanted a slight change to the menu suggestions Moreno's reply was, "It's a democracy. No problem!"
I had some Muscado dessert wine to finish the meal. A chilled half bottle was placed in front of me. I felt that I was on a visit to a best friend's home.
We were left home to the door at around 11pm having experienced the best meal we have ever had on any of our countless visits to Italy. The meal came to 110 euros for starters, mains, desserts, two glasses of Prosecco, a bottle of red , and quite a helping of Moscado. Money well spent on what happened to be our 23rd wedding anniversary. If we are spared, we will be back.

My husband and I signed up for the cooking class and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We were conveniently picked up near our hotel and transported to the restaurant. We were shown how to make various dishes (risotto, prosciutto wrapped veal and tortellini). We were offered coffee upon arrival and wine throughout the day. The cooking class is not hands-on, you watch the chef prepare and cook all the meals. After the cooking class you are transported back to where you were picked up. I definitely recommend the cooking class!
