We spent the last 2 weeks of August here and have booked to go back next year, so that shows we enjoyed our holiday!

On arrival we were welcomed with a drink, and check in was quick and easy, although we were unaware we needed to provide a printed copy of our booking so had not brought one. They were happy for us to forward the email so no great problems there. We were then shown to our room by our concierge, Yefri, who was friendly and helpful throughout the holiday, booking our a la carte restaurants and assisting with a couple of minor issues we had during our stay.

As always with somewhere new it takes a day or 2 to get to know your way around and figure out where everything is and what times things are open, etc.

The resort is very pleasant, with well maintained gardens, well looked after pool areas and a lovely beach. There are turkeys, flamingos, peacocks and a swan around the grounds which delighted our 10 year old, especially when the peacocks turned up at the pool late in the afternoon for a drink!

The food was varied and good quality, with availability at different areas throughout the day. As with most all-inclusive buffets after 2 weeks the food seems a bit samey, though with a good variety to start with there is only so much you can do to provide variety so we have no complaints on this front. We never had a problem finding something to eat for 5 of us. On the subject of food we just wanted to mention Wilkin who cooks fried eggs and omelettes at breakfast in the main buffet - he does a fine job non-stop throughout breakfast.

On the subject of staff we found every single member of staff we came across during our holiday to be friendly and helpful, even down to a simple "Ola" from maids and gardeners, and although there was a language barrier to various degrees we were always able to communicate without any trouble. We even had Miguel teaching us a little Spanish while bringing us drinks by the pool. Final staff mention goes to Morla at the pool bar for some highly enjoyable Margaritas! The staff genuinely give the impression that they enjoy their jobs and want to make the guests feel welcome.

We also made use of the dive centre during our stay, with myself and our 10 year old daughter going on dives at sea twice. It was her 1st time diving and she felt very comfortable and well looked after and is keen to do it again.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay and are already looking forward to going back in 2019!

We stayed at the resort for 12 days in August. We were a family of four, two adults and two kids, ages 9.5 and 2.5 years old.
We traveled with Vacation Express, direct flight from JFK to La Romana, round trip. Transfer to hotel was included.

CHECK IN: it was pretty smooth, no issues there.

ROOM: We were upgraded for free to a Jr. suite in building 7, but had to give it up as it was right in front of the pool and was very noisy during the day, as our youngest was napping. We still got an upgraded room in the same block but it was smaller. Please not that I emailed ahead of time and kindly requested for a bigger room.

RESTAURANTS: we tried all 4 restaurants. We liked the Mexican the best. The food was delicious and the service was very good. The worst one was, surprisingly, the Japanese restaurant. The food was very salty and raw. We left hungry. Also, the waiter spoke zero English, he mixed our order of drinks a few times and had to cal for another waiter to translate. The La Colonial was good as well. Steak House was not good either. The steak was raw, and that’s after I explained to my best ability that we do not eat raw meat, especially the kids, and it has to be well done. The service was non existent. The buffet- It’s on the smaller side, with the same exact selection of food every day. Most of the time you will be paying a guessing game since there very few labels for the food that is being presented and if there is any, it’s usualky wrong. Please note, there is no air conditioner in the buffet and it’s VERY hot since they do cooking right there. As a result of the buffet being open, there are birds freely flying in and out, sitting on the tables and a verity of different insects that feeds of the food. Not the most hygienic thing I have seen, I must say. But do try their oatmeal, it was delicious and probably the only thing we found that was actually in a closed container. We didn’t use the buffet for lunch but We did use it for dinner for about half of our stay. Each night has speciality cuisine like Italian, Mexican, Dominican nights. We loved the Dominican evening buffet, it had a nice selection of food. Please note that the chefs and about 90% of the buffet and restaurants staff do not speak any English. I mean, I couldn’t even order a regular omelette without assistance. A tip- when dining in the buffet, try to sit at a table that is right under a fan that is above it. It gives some air and relief from the heat and humidity.

THE POOL: the pool is nice and is constantly cleaned. We had no issues finding chairs under the shed, and that’s around 8:30-9am. The pool bar is nice, the drinks are not water downed and pretty strong. The bartenders also go around the pool and provide drinks to those that are just chilling.

THE BEACH: the best part about this resort is definitely the beach. It’s amazing. The water is so calm and clear, the shore is shallow, warm water. My kids loved it.

ENTERTAINMENT: I must say that the Star team is trying very hard to entertain and involved the resort guests in different activities. There is bingo every day by the pool at 3:30 and at the theater at 8pm, water polo, aerobics at the pool and beach. Foam party was awesome, my oldest loved it. With that being said, we were very dissatisfied with the night entertainment. It’s non existent for kids. The mini disco is just dancing to Latin music on stage for 30 min. No show, nothing. Then there is an over an hour break between the mini disco and the adult show, which makes no sense. People just sit around, listen to Latin music and the Star team members go around ask people to dance. We saw a few shows, and comparing to other resorts and shows, we were not entertained. The shows are outdated, the music is louder then the singing and to be honest you can’t really make up the words because of the heavy accents of the singers. The entertainment at the lobby is very good. The pianist played nice music and that’s were we usually went to after dinner. My kids had a blast there dancing with other kids.

Overall, we had a nice vacation but the little things kept compiling and it was kinda annoying. I don’t think we will be back to this resort anytime soon.

Dear guest,

On behalf of the entire Iberostar team, we thank you for choosing us as your vacation destination and sharing your experience with the Tripadvisor community.

For us it is very important to have knowledge of how our guests have perceived their stay in the property, since with their comments we can know which are those aspects that are on the right track and those that we should improve.

First of all, we are pleased to know that in general there were several points that met your expectations, as was the quick check-in, although we regret the situation with your room and the inconveniences that arose in the process. Also, we thank you for highlighting our beautiful beach and the great effort that Star Team collaborators make to integrate everyone.

On the other hand, but no less important, we regret many that several aspects of our gastronomy have not been to your liking. Sincerely, we do everything in our power to have options for everyone in each of our restaurants and buffets. We will share the details about the gastronomy with the executive chef so that the pertinent corrective measures are applied. As we will share with management the other aspects, so that they take charge of taking the pertinent measures.

Thank you for helping us improve.

We wish to be able to welcome you in the future and so you can witness the improvements. Come back soon and do not hesitate to contact us if you need assistance with your next reservation.

Best Regards,

Our family of seven (my mom, wife, and our four children age 15-20) had a spectacular week at IHD. I researched the entire trip extensively and this helped to ensure a smooth vacation start to finish. Other reviews are generally spot on, I'll add my own notes to help your trip.

Check-in was quick and smooth. No line when we arrived at 5:00 on Friday. They met our building and room requests 100%. Miguel did a fabulous job showing us around the resort and making reservations at all the restaurants.

Rooms were as expected. Clean, well kept, minibar stocked daily. Maids did great! The only real issue we had was mosquitos. Despite keeping our doors closed except when we entered and exited, there was always a mosquito or two in the room. Now, they were not as scary as those we have in the south. Each of us just got a total of one bite, but they were quicker than our mosquitos here so they were harder to kill. They did fumigate our room once during the stay but we saw them afterwords. I would recommend a power bar. We only found a total of two unused outlets, one of those in the bathroom.

Our best restaurant expereiences were at La Geisha and El Colonial. The other two were good. Service level was very good, although twice they got our dishes mixed up.

Service level throughout the resort was very high. All employees seemed happy to be there and enjoy their work. That was reflected in their general demeanor and interactions with guests. Despite occassional language barriers there were rarely any real issues.

The beach was wonderful. Yes, chairs are apparently saved overnight on the front row. It is annoying, but apparently it can't or won't be fixed. We loved using the catamarans free, took those out every day, even twice a few days. Snorkeling was not as good as I hoped. Lots of smaller fish around the reef balls, but maybe we were spoiled by better snorkeling at other locations in the Caribbean. This was one of the few downers of our vacation, but obviously is not the fault of the resort. It is a true rarety for a resort to have a great beach with great snorkeling.

The pool was wonderful as well. Always people around working hard to keep it clean.

Plenty to do all the time if that's your thing, also easy to do nothing and relax, which was mostly our thing. My son enjoyed the beach volleyball and beach games.

Bars were all great. Good service and drinks. Booze not watered down, we saw many bottles where the seal was broken then poured. Many name brands offered plus local rum which was good.

Check-out was also smooth and painless. Two of our ladies enjoyed the spa, no complaints at all from them.

Buffet food was better in the front main buffet versus the back beach buffet. It is worth the walk unless they are doing the seafood paella which is a must-have!

Buffet breakfast was OK to good. Lacking on some of my southern favorites like bacon, grits, and biscuits, but still LOTS of choices, many of them good. Lunch was good. Buffet dinner was good.

We've taken more cruises than stays at AI resorts like this, so I thought I would make a comparison for those considering between the two vacations.

COST: Including airfare which is usually required on a cruise, this vacation was less expensive by a few hundred dollars per person over a good balcony cruise fare plus a typical $300 flight. Although our vacation was six days, not seven. Per day cost was still less here. We tend to shop around a LOT for our vacations and always get a great deal whether on a cruise or AI.

ROOM: Much larger room here versus a cruise. Prefer the resort.

FOOD: Quality and service level is a little bit higher on a Holland America cruise like we tend to take, about the same if comparing to Carnival or Royal Caribbean.

DRINKS: All free here, the resort is preferred.

ENTERTAINMENT: Evening entertainment better on a cruise ship, but daytime activities better here. Still, not a big difference. We really enjoy the live music on Holland America ships, so they have an advantage if you are into live music. I enjoyed the one show we attended more than I thought we would. Our son plays bass, and the band even let him sit in with them during the "after" portion of the show one night. A nice gesture.

DAYTIME ACTIVITIES: Much better at a resort if you enjoy the beach and beach activities. The beach and ocean are always there when you want them. No so much on a cruise. Sailboat, kayaks etc. available at no charge at the resort.

POOL: Again, huge and never crowded at a resort. Small and often crowded on a cruise ship.

OTHER GUESTS: Mostly non-Americans here, mostly Americans on the cruises we have been on. We enjoy being around people from other cultures. Prefer the resort.

CASINO: Nearby here, onboard a cruise ship.

AMBIENCE: Fine art on a cruise ship, beautiful natural areas at a resort. Both are nice.

PORTS: This is the key and obvious advantage to a cruise. You get to see 3-4 different ports on a cruise ship and experience those areas. At a resort you are limited to what off site activities are within driving distance.

AIR CONDITIONING: We did miss this at times at the resort. Your room is the only primary escape from the heat. You get used to the heat and humidity, but there were times where I would have enjoyed escaping to some AC that wasn't our room. Lots of AC on a ship.

BOTTOM LINE: I can see us visiting more resorts like this one. We have no complaints with this one, but we tend to try different places in different countries. If we were to return to the Dominican Republic, I could definitely see us returning here. Don't hesitate to book IHD.

We used a private shuttle service to and from the airport. I definitely recommend Shopy Tours for this. Also, you SHOULD arrive at the airport 2.5 hours before your flight. The airport was VERY slow and arriving 2 hours ahead we almost missed our flight.

Room Tip: Choose building 3 or 7 to be near the beach without an extra charge. 7 is the best.
