“Would not pay £155!!!!”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

We had a Groupon voucher for 1 nights stay at the Chevin. When we arrived we checked in and we were put in room 48. What a dissapointment, the room looked that it had not been decorated for some time, very dark and dingy. A few things that we found that were not up to standard, ripped nets on the window, dirty skirting board, dirty window frames, no spare pillows in the room that they say are in the wardrobe if you need them and we even had to ask for loo roll!!! The taster menu dinner was nice but no way worth £32.95, as a previous reviewer mentioned. Would not go back even at £69.

Dear Keith,
Thank you for your comments and am sorry you felt we did not achieve our usual high standards.
All our room get regular checks from our housekeeping and maintenance team to ensure that they are clean, bright and in working order.
I have spoken to our housekeeping department regarding the toilets room and extra pillows. They will ensure that this is resolved immediately and can also inform you that extra pillows are stored in the wardrobe in your room.
Our 6 course taster menu is very popular and am sorry that this was not to your taste. What we do have is our ala carte menu that again holds different dishes.
Again my thanks for your comments,

Really nice place, we had a Groupon voucher for a one night stay with a six course meal, bottle of wine and breakfast for £140.
I was a bit dubious before hand as to whether this was good value but am happy to report it was well worth it feel a bit of a cheapskate now!
The food is AMAZING really tasty clean plates each time. The bar prices were as expected for a hotel about £5 for a beer and soft drink, The room whilst slightly on the small size was clean and comfortable liked the quirky layout as well.
The pool was also very nice and looked like it had recently been re-fitted.
All the staff were very nice and helpful, will definatley keep an eye out for the next voucher ;)

Having had an excellent stay before on a Groupon deal, my wife and I were looking forward to our 1 night stay, (B&B plus a 6 course taster meal with wine) Arrived and checked in ok , we were allocated room 40 which isn’t in the main hotel complex but just outside. I opened the door to find a dirty, dingy plain room which looked to be disused. It consisted of 2 single beds pushed together covered with a double sheet, which did not fit. A very shabby (not shabby chic) chair from a 3 piece suit with a nasty stain on the arm. The chair, the bed and a television were the only objects that helped furnish the room, there weren't even any pictures on the walls. The carpets had not been hoovered as there were discarded clothes tags on the floor. The bathroom was very very dated with yellow grout in the tiles.
The view from the window was of a rickety old trellis hiding a view of a loading bay.
My wife joked about the room being the 'Store room / Groupon room' which in hindsight sounds about right.
We immediately went back to the reception and asked polity if we could change rooms for the above reasons. The request was greeted with lots of sucking air over teeth and puzzled looks as the receptionists told us they were fully booked. Suddenly one remembered a cabin had become available after a maintenance problem had been resolved.
We moved to cabin 59 which was much better, a little tired but much much better.
Other than that, the meal was good and the breakfast was great. We checked out with no other problems to report. We noticed the room rates listed in reception and the hotel were going to charge room 40 out at £155.00 for a nights stay!!! We were amazed, we wouldn’t have paid £20.00 to stay in there.
I dont think we will stay again even if a Groupon deal comes up again. A real shame, because of the setting, the hotel could be so much more, with a little investment, housekeeping and attention to detail.

Room Tip: dont accept room 40

Dear Rory
I’m very sorry that you felt your room was inadecate.
What we have been doing is making significant changies of investment to several of our rooms to add to our product.

I'm sure that you will feel that the actions we have taken are the correct steps forward.

We have just taken advanctage of a recent Groupon deal to stay a night at this hotel. Some aspects (jacuzzi and setting are brilliant) others, radiator that cannot be turned off etc. weren't.

The taster menu would never be worth £32.95 per head (the salmon mouse was actually the same size as an iced Gem). The rest of the food was tasteless. We had to ask for the wine three times.

Before going in to dinner we had asked reception to get someone to turn the radiator down in room 6 as the room was stiflingly hot. Nothing happened and when I asked why not the next morning I was told maintenance only work 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.

The decor in the rooms is very dated, the bathroom didn't even match.

This may sound like I'm being picky, but lets be honest, it's not a £70 a night hotel, they want £155 per night B&B.

Room Tip: Don't choose room 6 until the radiator is fixed

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback, I was sorry to read that you did not fully enjoy your stay with us.
The groupon offer at £69 was an exceptional offer and very much value for money.
I have however looked at the radiator in room 6 and is now working fine, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

With thanks,

Jurgen Kruijt
