The hotel was our base as part of a five day Shearings holiday to Durham & Hadrian’s Wall. It was very welcoming and all the staff were friendly and helpful in all aspects which makes a huge difference to a holiday.
Our room was lovely and only lacked a couple of minor items to make it ideal. These were a towel hanger next to the sink and a shelf in the shower cubicle for shampoo etc. The latter was particularly annoying as it meant continually picking things off the floor.
The restaurant was excellent serving a buffet style breakfast with a choice of full English or a selection of cereals accompanied by fruit.
Toast was also available in the restaurant and other items such as smoked salmon with eggs or kippers could be supplied on request.
The evening meal was varied and we had no complaints during our stay as the food was well prepared and presentation well above average for a hotel of this price range.
Adjacent to the restaurant there was a bar area and cocktail lounge where you could relax in comfort and enjoy your day with a good choice of drinks and bar meals.
For any guests wishing to partake in more energetic activities there was a decent swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and a fully equipped gymnasium to keep anyone occupied and relaxed.
For those who enjoy a walk in nice surroundings there is a beautiful garden and the river runs alongside. Adjacent to the hotel is a very picturesque old bridge over the river and this can be crossed on foot to access other paths. Certainly a very nice way to pass the time after dinner on a warm day.
Finally there is one other thing that adds to its appeal. The WiFi signal in the hotel is excellent unlike many hotels. This applies to rooms as well as public areas which is rare in my experience.
I would happily recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to explore the area as it’s close to Hadrian’s Wall and is in easy reach of Durham or Gateshead shopping centre if desired.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Set in a beautiful river front location, just five miles from the market town of Hexham, the George at Chollerford is a historic building dating back to the 1700's renowned for its fine food and hospitality. It is great to have such a history behind the hotel as we feel we are doing an excellent job of keeping the tradition going, but we have also spent a lot of money upgrading a number of facilities in the hotel including the leisure club, with its swimming pool and gym, situated west of Newcastle we are in ideal spot for walkers, history buffs and gardeners alike - you will be spoilt for choice. The hotel is a perfect retreat in a location that we consider to be one of the most relaxing in Northumbria. ... more less
