Despite 37 years of fairly extensive international travel, I have never written one of these review things. However, after discovering the exquisite gem that is Liquid Dumaguete, I felt I would be entirely remiss, if I didn't sing their their many virtues from the "mountain tops". Absolutely NO ONE travelling to the Dumaguete area, should go without having the opportunity to experience this extraordinary little resort. I can not possibly recommend it strongly enough.
Although their primary purpose and theme is to provide a truly exceptional "soup to nuts" dive experience - which they deliver in spades - the resort also delivers a remarkably enjoyable stay for leisure and business travellers (I was there on business for 6 days and was not able to dive, but will certainly remedy that on my next visit!)
Owners Tim and Zoe (highly experienced international dive experts) and their management team of Phil, Elin and Jim, strive to and succeed in providing a stay that meets and far exceeds the needs and desires of all their guests, regardless of the purpose of their visit. Their well trained, and extremely courteous and professional staff ensure and complete the process at every turn, and on a daily basis.
For the strict dive fans, the prices are great, and the program and dive options which are extensive, leave no stone unturned. I was able to regularly observe the comprehensive team of instructors interact with their dive guests and students. They were all varying degrees of outstanding in both their approach and expertise. Phil, the underwater photography expert (but a lousy poker player), provides mesmerizing dive videos for those who wish to take home a vivid life long memory of their underwater experiences at Liquid Dumaguete.
As for the amenities;
The individual accomodation huts, which were all newly built for the resort opening in October 2011, are clean and comfortable and all have a mind numbing view of the ocean and the exquisite sunrises. Although spartan in furnishing, they are ridiculously inexpensive (p1200 a night), clean and very comfortable. The ceiling fan directly over the bed ensures a cool and restful sleep. Each hut comes with its own bathroom and shower (heated by the natural hotsprings which run under the property), and a private porch on which you can sit and drink in the incredible view. If you are fussy, you need to bring your own toiletries.
The pool area is comfortable, and the water which is salt, is clear and refreshing, and just the right temperature. It is cleaned every morning by the maintenance staff. The extensive lawns also offer a volleyball net for those so inclined.
The restaurant/bar area is simple but provides an extraordinary open air atmosphere and ambience. The adjacent "chill" area is where guests and instructors relax, interact, use the complimentary wifi, and enjoy various games, books and movies, at various times during the day and night.
The food is inexpensive, fresh, and generally outstanding. Each day has fixed menus, with Lunch and Dinner changing daily. If you have allergies or special dietary needs, the chef will prepare you an individual meal outside of the set menu. Perhaps the most unique (and truly enjoyable) experience of the visit, is the "communal" dinner approach, where all tables are pulled together, and everyone - guests, owners, management and instructors - eat together, get to know one another, swap stories, and make new friends, and enjoy many laughs.
The drinks are incredibly cheap (thank God!!!). Each day they have a happy hour where they offer further reduced prices (thank God!!!) and a special drink for 1/2 price (thank God!!!) One of their "signature cocktails" - the "Liquid Dumatini" - is to die for, and one I personally believe is destined to become the most popular drink in the Philippines!
In closing, I have, over the years, stayed in hostels, and $1500 a night hotel rooms, and everything in between. However, NEVER HAVE I ENJOYED A STAY, that so brilliantly combines exceptional value, extraordinary service, an outstanding setting, tremendous dive packages and instruction, fabulous food and drink, and truly memorable social interactivity.
Hats off, cheers, and heartfelt thanks to Tim, Zoe and all the crew for a "top shelf" experience. You guys rock!!! And I'll be back!
For anyone out there in travel land, you truly owe it to yourself to discover this little gem of a resort. If you don't, it is simply, and sadly, your great loss!
