Food was great. And the staff were nice and friendly. The atmosphere was great, it was nice and cozy and warm and had great music playing in the background. Great place to have dinner.

We stayed in a chalet across the road from here so it was a no brainer to try it the first night for dinner. It was very busy and we didn't realize we probably should've made a reservation, but we were seated at a small table right away. We had the burger, which was delicious. The next day we'd planned to try the cafe in The Hermitage but saw that it not only closed early but was also reserved for a wedding reception...back to Old Mountaineer, still no reservation but it was earlier than last night and they weren't busy. We had the salmon and bacon pies...so tasty. Their salads are very fresh too. The next afternoon we stopped by on our way back to our chalet to make a dinner reservation for that night...really no reason to try anywhere else. This time we got an even better table near the huge window to soak in the amazing views. We enjoyed the pasta special...again very good. We were consistently greeted with a smile by friendly staff, and we love the rustic feel of the place. It's not inexpensive but we felt it was in line with what you'd expect for good quality in a rather remote environment. If you read the history of what the couple had to deal with in trying to coexist with the monopoly vendor in the village, you appreciate having this wonderful dining option....we happily support family business, especially one so deserving.

Ordered a flat white coffee and a hamburger. The $5 coffee arrived in a capaccino cup. Elsewhere these are served on normal sized coffee cups for $4-$5. To get that quantity of coffee here would cost $10. The menu selection was limited specially if you do not like salmon. The burger was $26 and came with chips. It was well cooked and tasty but very small for the amount charged. The area is isolated but so are many other places in the South Island and they do not gouge like here. This is an example of what is going wrong with our tourist industry. Many of my clients say the same thing "NZ is very expensive for what you get".

Please do remember that all businesses in the park pay two lots of rates, one to DOC, one to the council, DOC concession fees, DOC monitoring rates and DOC yearly levies as well of course as 15% GST. And yes, it is about 300km from the main supply chain - one way. Concession fees are also paid for activities in the park which leads us to wonder if you have a permit to operate here and if you actually pay for the clients you bring into the park? Possibly not. The menu offers a strong variety of options, the coffee is fair trade and organic, the milk in your coffee is often organic and if you had a problem with the size of the cup we would have been fine on changing it. It's the same amount of coffee.

We arrived a couple of minutes before one of the staff was going on a break and so it transpired that we couldn’t have a beer or a glass of wine with our lunch until she was back on duty at 5pm. Thirsty travellers, as we were, we were in need of refreshment! When our burgers eventually arrived, mine was cold in the middle and when I sent it back I was obviously put to the back of the queue again, behind a couple of large parties which had arrived so my husband had actually finished his quite large plateful before mine reappeared ... after I had gone to chase it up twice. Hungry as we were after a long journey, this wasn’t exactly the service we were looking for.

I agree and apologise for the burger mixup. It is not usually put to the back if something like that happens. Regarding the alcohol: We are a cafe and mainly serve alcohol in the evenings although we can serve during the day if the licensed person is on duty, as licensing laws are so very strict and we have even experienced attempts at entrapment so the staff follow the rules to the letter. They have to be strict on their breaks as they work split shifts.

Not many places to eat out in Mt Cook village & all have mixed reviews so we chose Old Mountaineers for lunch & so glad we did. Even though it was busy the staff were friendly & efficient. The dining room has a lot of mountaineers equipment from days gone by hanging on the walls which is really interesting to look at. We ordered the smoked Salmon salad & the Gourmet Pie with salad & chips. I believe the Salmon is sourced locally & is so very delicious, some of the best Salmon we've ever eaten. The pie was a generous size & filled with slices of beautiful flavoursome pork with a very nice sauce. Help yourself to water from the fridge which is a good idea. Very impressed with the quality & portions of the food we had.
