Back in 2013, the WanderingWabbits spent a night in Kurow...and that's a tale best saved for another time. LOL
However we had a great steak meal at the local Kurow Hotel: so great that we've reminisced about it ever since! April 2018, we deliberately detoured to Kurow...just to see if the steak was REALLY that good.
And it WAS! BLOODY good!
Kurow Hotel (the yellow+blue one on the main drag) is your standard no-frills casual kiwi country pub - what y'see is what y'get. And y'get a BIG perfectly-cooked tender juicy ribeye (with mushroom sauce or garlic butter) and plenty of sides, for just $28.
Restaurant quality at pub prices: you can't beat THAT!

Lost in time, this is a real old-fashioned hotel from the original kiwi settler history. Yes, it’s tired, dated and dirty in places. But the atmosphere of a place like this, together with genuine hospitality of staff & locals makes this the kind of place any traveller interested in cultural experiences a must-stop. If you are a sensitive soul, and don’t like bars full of sweary blokes and the smell of cows & sweat, don’t bother. If, on the other hand you want a proper pint and interesting grass-roots context, this is the place for pie & chips.

Pub serving traditional Kiwi grub. Good selection of beers. Plenty of locals eat/drink here so must be good. Had a great steak.

We called in for lunch when cycling the A2O. Best toasted sandwiches I've had. A jug of beer and some good hospitality. What more could you want?
Wish we had stayed here instead of Otematata.

We were having trouble getting accommodation in Oamaru and a kind lady asked where we were heading. Next day was Wanaka and she said why not go via Kurow, she even rang the pub to confirm a room for us.

The room was quite good with an ensuite, the pub was warm and inviting. The food was very good. Just one night, a bit off the beaten track, good roads and worth a visit.

Recommended.
