“Even better than last time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2012

We planned our latest trip to the South Island around a meal at Taste, so good was it on our last visit a year ago. When we learned they were closed on Sundays, we re-arranged our itinerary so we'd be in Geraldine when they were open. We even booked three weeks in advance...and a good thing that was too, as the Friday night we were there, they were turning people away at the door...in June mind you!

It still amazes me that this unassuming restaurant in small town Geraldine serves up such incredibly good food. It is, without a doubt, the best restaurant in town. The main road may be deserted and dark, but I suspect there's always a cluster of parked cars surrounding Taste.

On this visit we shared the Mediterranean Tortellini...spinach & ricotta tortellini, Kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes & Italian Chorizo, with creamy rocket & cashew nut pesto. Lovely.

For a main I had the tomato, zucchini & basil chicken ($28.50) - Filo pastry parcel filled with chicken, cream cheese & spinach, served on a zucchini & bacon cake, with roasted garlic, roma tomato & basil cream sauce...it was just as good as it sounds. The description alone is making me hungry.

My spouse was equally impressed with his Carpet Bag Steak ($34) - Angus prime rib eye stuffed with Pacific oysters and topped with bacon, on Daulphinoise potatoes with oyster and chive marscapone. He said it was excellent.

For dessert we had affogatos - perfect.

Next time we're in Geraldine, guess where we're going? Well done guys, keep up the good work.

“Do they have Michelin in New Zealand”

If they do have Michelin in New Zealand, then this place should be in it. Cooking was imaginative and different from the average Kiwi restaurant.

Good matching wines! For the 4th time they won an award for beef and lam and it was good!

“Are we really in Geraldine?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2011

My spouse and I had dinner at Taste while in Geraldine for an overnight stay, which incidentally, is worth much more time than a single night. Peel Forest, need I say more?

The restaurant was recommended by the owner of our B&B, who also made a booking for us. We were shattered from our overnight international flight and drive from Christchurch, but glad we managed to stay awake long enough for dinner. My spouse proclaimed his Prime Angus Pure Beef Eye Fillet, topped with oyster, saffron & chive mascarpone, served with asparagus filled mini York, caramelized shallots & crispy ginger EXCELLENT ($33).

My breast of chicken filled with bacon, cream cheese & spinach, served on corn & chive cakes, with roasted garlic, Roma tomato & basil cream sauce was also very good ($28.50), but the chicken was a wee bit overcooked.

The triple chocolate terrine, white chocolate mud cake and chocolate truffle tart with wild berry coulis sampler we shared for dessert was less of a success ($13), but hey, we were absolutely stunned to find a restaurant of this caliber in Geraldine in the first place. Who knew?

“Brilliant Restaurant , Great Value for 5* meals”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2011

Geraldine is a great place to have the sole night stop if one has to Drive the Picton-Queenstown route in a hurry.
This restaurant has only been open 18 months or so and is operated by two sisters.
The meals are 5* , We had the Asian mixed starter followed by venison & Lamb Rump
cooked to perfection Lamb Medium & venison M/R .
he portions were substantial & presentation fabulous.
The desserts looked fabulous , by that time we were totally replete.

All in all , best value restuarant we have visited in new Zealand in the last 5 years
