We planned our latest trip to the South Island around a meal at Taste, so good was it on our last visit a year ago. When we learned they were closed on Sundays, we re-arranged our itinerary so we'd be in Geraldine when they were open. We even booked three weeks in advance...and a good thing that was too, as the Friday night we were there, they were turning people away at the door...in June mind you!
It still amazes me that this unassuming restaurant in small town Geraldine serves up such incredibly good food. It is, without a doubt, the best restaurant in town. The main road may be deserted and dark, but I suspect there's always a cluster of parked cars surrounding Taste.
On this visit we shared the Mediterranean Tortellini...spinach & ricotta tortellini, Kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes & Italian Chorizo, with creamy rocket & cashew nut pesto. Lovely.
For a main I had the tomato, zucchini & basil chicken ($28.50) - Filo pastry parcel filled with chicken, cream cheese & spinach, served on a zucchini & bacon cake, with roasted garlic, roma tomato & basil cream sauce...it was just as good as it sounds. The description alone is making me hungry.
My spouse was equally impressed with his Carpet Bag Steak ($34) - Angus prime rib eye stuffed with Pacific oysters and topped with bacon, on Daulphinoise potatoes with oyster and chive marscapone. He said it was excellent.
For dessert we had affogatos - perfect.
Next time we're in Geraldine, guess where we're going? Well done guys, keep up the good work.
