Booked Hagg Hill Hall for a university friends reunion. What a fantastic, unusual location. The house dates from the 1600’s, and has so many unique features. The house has everything you need to cater for a large group, cooking facilities and large seating areas. An added benefit for our party was the indoor swimming pool and hot tub, the children were all very excited and it provided a key feature for our short break. The owner was at hand if needed and was very helpful during our stay, as he lives in the house next door.
We would definitely recommend the property to anyone looking for accommodation for a large group, who like feature properties.
We stayed at Hagg Hill Hall for 3 nights to celebrate a 60th birthday party. We were a group of 15 adults (ranging from 18 to 60+) and 2 children and a toddler.
The check in was informative and told us everything we needed to know. The owner Melvyn was very friendly and gave us a tour that lasted about 15 minutes. After that we were left to our own devices. Melvyn just popped in again on the last night to say thank you and then again when we were checking out to say good bye. He was even kind enough to give us some parting gifts! So if you see past reviews seeing that the owner likes to let himself in all the time, we did not experience that and we were happy to see him before we left. He told us some interesting stories about the house. He is friendly with the ladies, but it all seems to be in jest and we found it funny.
The house itself is perfect for a long weekend away with family. The owner has refurbished it and filled it with antique furniture and ornaments that compliment the house beautifully. Although it is such a grand house, it does not feel stuffy and we were able to relax fully. The bedrooms are great. Most have en suites, the beds are comfortable and there was plenty of sleeping space for our group. There are enough recreational rooms downstairs to keep everyone happy and the kitchen and garden rooms are great. We did not really use the large formal dining room, but that would be great if you wanted to order in catering and sit down for a formal meal. The pool, hot tubs, barbecues, pool table and other games means that there is always something to do. There is also a toy cupboard for the kids. I might just recommend some adult board games for when the weather is bad.
The Peak District is a short drive away for those who like to go walking. We would recommend that if you wanted to go out and about for walks etc then you would need to drive as there is not too much within walking distance. There is also a large Tesco, Aldi, Iceland and other shops about 10 minutes away in the car, for supplies.
Overall we had a fantastic weekend. You can't go wrong really if you want to stay in a beautiful old house and have fun celebrating, jumping in the pool and relaxing in the hot tubs. The kids and adults all loved it and we will be back!
Thanks Melvyn and staff!
An excellent centre for a family group, ours was a party of 16 ,8 children aged from 18 month to 15 yrs and 8 adults from 42 to 78.
There is no real reason to leave the hall as with a swimming pool, paddling pool and hot pool for the energetic, table football, air hockey and pool table for the sporty and a genuine cabin cruiser as a children's play house there was lots to keep us amused.Unfortunately the weather was not suitable for a BBQ but there were 2 BBQs, a large outdoor seating area and a second hot tub for the hot weather. If you want to go out there were nice walks and cycle rides from the Hall and places of interest within easy driving range. The flowers and wine from the owner were a very nice addition to our stay.
Hagg Hill Hall accommodated our family group of seventeen adults and children - plus dog - with room to spare. There was plenty of flexibility in the sleeping arrangements and living areas so that we could all have plenty of space to relax. The pool is excellent, plenty big enough for the swimmers with a linked paddling pool for the toddlers. Having the pool and the two hot tubs kept everyone happy over a very wet weekend.
The individual towels, dressing gowns and slippers that were provided were really useful for everyone using the pool and tubs, and the poolside shower was also excellent.
The house is obviously very old and full of character and antiques, but it was also very warm, had plenty of hot water and good wifi.
We all had a lovely relaxing family get together here and would be very happy to return.
Just arrived back from Hagg Hill Hall after spending a long weekend with 20 fabulous ladies. This place is amazing. The House itself is huge, full of history and has everything you could ask for. The owner Mel, his 3 dogs and the staff added extra character and a relaxed but professional atmosphere to our stay. We hired a chef and a waiter (Big T) on the recommendation of Mel for the Saturday evening. They provided an outstanding meal and service that would rival any decent restaurant. We booked a takeaway meal on the Sunday for 15 from the local town. It arrived on time, hot and was good quality. The facilities in the local area are great. Within a few miles radius you had shops-pubs-supermarket-country park-various takeaways and horse riding if you wish. We had a ball.
