The whole family enjoyed our meal at Marmotte. Excellent service. Great steaks. Nice atmosphere- clearly very popular with visiting skiers. Good cheese dishes. Kids would have liked there to have been burgers on the menu. Excellent wine choices. Very good evening and we will definitely come back.

Three of us came to this restaurant, not knowing it was here. We had intended to find L'O a la Bouche, given its number one ranking on this website, but we had been shown downstairs to our table and ordered a drink before we realised that Marmott sits below the aforementioned place. Oh well, it's a cosy enough place, and the waiter did a great job of keeping a smile on his face despite one of the party crassly refusing to speak any French.
To start, I ordered a beef carpaccio, which was a generous portion, but unfortunately, not seasoned enough, leaving it rather bland. Beef carpaccio can be an exquisite dish, but this was a distinctly average interpretation of it. The main course arrived, a pork stew for me and two steaks for the other two. The pork stew was pretty good to be fair; well seasoned, extremely tender meat, and a tasty sauce to come with it, which was not too salty, but full of character. Unfortunately the steaks were completely forgettable. They had not been cooked on a high enough heat at all, so they were not hard enough on the outside, and as a result not enough of a contrast to the outside. Either this chef does not know how to cook a steak, or he is running on too tight a budget. Equally, the dauphinoise potatoes which accompanied it were not seasoned enough either, so they did not have enough of a character. They weren't bad, but you can have so much better in this part of France.
It's a shame, because the waiter was lovely, and even provided some delicious local liquour after the dinner, which came in a glass teapot thing and you had to gulp it down from the pot, rather than pour it into a glass.
Unfortunately, that was the highlight of a rather mediocre dinner in Les Contamines.
