“Modern Charm in Great Location”
Reviewed 9 June 2015 for a stay in June 2015

We found this cottage while planning our visit to the Antrim Coast from our vacation in Galway for our family of 5 (mom, dad, two teens and grandma). We had booked #10 but were reassigned to #11, which is the cottage we actually stayed in. The layout was perfect. All the rooms were well-equipped and the kitchen had everything we needed! The location was perfect -- the beach is in walking distance, Giant's Causeway is close and there's even a well-stocked Co-op grocery store in Bushmills. We had a comfortable and enjoyable stay in Portballintrae.

“Excellent Modern Self Catering Cottage in an ideal Location ....”

We booked this cottage for a weekend in October for a family of 4. The owner, Patrick, was very helpful through the booking process and when we arrived the cottage was 100% as described. Very well appointed, very clean, and really a home from home including toys for the kids, DVDs etc. Bedrooms were excellent (very comfortable beds and bed linen) on the lower floor with 2 bathrooms, with a large airy living area upstairs including an open fire which was particularly nice. We brought our bikes with us and had a fantastic weekend of sunshine on the N Coast .... and for that this cottage location is perfect to access the cycling routes in the area including the 93 route from Magilligan to Giants Causeway. The cottage is set in a development of modern cottages just outside the village of Portballintrae - a peaceful & handy location. All 4 of us had a great time and were able to relax here for a weekend .... highly recommended and we will be back !!

“Fantastic cottage with great amenities”
Reviewed 6 December 2013 for a stay in November 2013

I and a group of four friends went up to stay in Portballintrae for a long weekend at the end of November. The cottage was perfect; it was airy, beautifully decorated and spacious. Three ground floor rooms, including one en-suite and beautiful shared bathroom; an open plan kitchen, dining room and living room, with a working fireplace.

The cottage is well-stocked with utensils and much of the equipment you'll need for a weekend at the North Coast (including umbrellas, wardrobe space and a washer/dryer in the utility room). I took a card with me as I left to recommend it to friends and family; a great place which gave us an equally good weekend.

“Cosy cottage, close to the beach and attractions, and great to stay in”
Reviewed 29 October 2013 for a stay in September 2013

This was a lovely home for our weekend away. Plenty of room, lovely and warm, hot showers and baths and comfy beds! All essentials for a long weekend away with friends.

The owner is very easy to contact, directions provided, and nothing was too much trouble.

Great location to visit local attractions, including the Giants Causeway, local castles, tea rooms, Bushmills Distillery and crabbing at the local beach.

Just fantastic.

“Perfect location for a North Coast getaway.”
Reviewed 5 August 2013 for a stay in July 2013

I have been raving to everyone about this place and about how I must be the luckiest person in Northern Ireland - while North Coast houses book out months in advance I only started looking in late June and unbelievably Patrick had a last minute cancellation for what is normally one of the busiest weeks in the middle of July. I snapped it up and of course it turned out to be an absolute scorcher!

Booking with Patrick was extremely easy - he's very relaxed and easy to deal with. When we arrived the house was absoultely spotless and kitted out with everything we needed. We have a 2yr old and so Patrick had arranged for a travel cot to be left out as well as a high chair and safety gates for the top and bottom of the stairs. The travel cot was brand new and really good to have as it saved us car space not having to bring our own. There are also great toys in the house for all ages - a huge box of duplo, a treasure chest of mixed toys hiding in what looked like a footstool, board games, videos, a games console (I'm not very techy so can't remember which one it was!) and loads of outdoor toys including buckets, spades, 2 great kites, nets for the rockpools etc. Lots of good reading material for the grown ups too.

The bedrooms are donwstairs and are arranged in 2 doubles - both lovely decor and spacious but as a previous reviewer noted, not a whole lot of wardrobe space in the rooms. However, there is a huge wardrobe in the hallway so if you don't mind keeping some things out there then it's more than enough. The 3rd is a small room towards the back door with 2 bunk beds in it and no storage space but again the big wardrobe in the hall should cover it. We found storage no problem to be honest. The bathroom is large and with one of the bedrooms having an en suite, there are more than enough facilities for everyone. Really clean and well stocked with towels.

Upstairs is where the house really comes to life. The open plan living/dining/kitchen is so large and comfortable with gorgeous views over the fields - it really allowed us to relax. There's a great corner suite sofa in it which you can just disappear into and not want to get out of. At one point during the week there were 6 adults and 2 children in the house and we didn't feel on top of each other at all. The kitchen is clean and well stocked with utensils, pots pans and some cooking essentials that always come in handy when you've forgotten something. There's a utility room with another sink and a washer/dryer that was great for dealing with wet and sandy beach wear. My only worry about the layout was the stairs - having safety gates was great but even with that, my 2 yr old really stuggled to get up and down them as they're wooden and a little steeper than we're used to. I mostly carried her up and down but even felt I had to be extra careful doing that. However, the 4 yr old with us had no bother with them at all. It might be a challenge for anyone with mobility difficulties.

The cul-de-sac of cottages felt extremely safe for children, well away from traffic and with a nice little grassy area at the back to sit out in. Walking from here to the beach took a little less than 10 mins so it's really a perfect location. We love Portballintrae for young kids as the rock pools are such fun for them to poke around in. Our 2 year old is too young to enjoy the bigger beaches at Portrush or Portstewart so Portballintrae is perfect for us. It was also walking distance to Bushmills - one day we walked to the station for the Bushmills - Giant's Causeway train and took a day trip on it. I'd also recommend walking into Bushmills for dinner at the Bushmills Inn in the evening - especially if you bring grandparents (babysitters) like we did. And it's less than 10 minutes in the car to Portrush so we took 2 trips there for the amusements.

All in all, a great stay, very lucky with the weather but would have loved it regardless. I would definitely go back to this cottage as it's so well looked after and Patrick is very friendly and easy-going.
