We were staying in Castigliona Del Lago and called in at Passignano on a lake trip on the Traghetti.
I was puzzled by one or two bad revues (admittedly quite old) where some complained of seeing an 'empty restaurant' and being told it was full. We went for a mid week lunch and arrived just after 12.35 (early for an Italian Pranzo) by 1:15 it was pretty full. If you were told it was full it was probably booked up. Anyway onto the service and food....
Initially we were greeted in a business like and slightly brusk manner which could, I suppose be interpreted by some as being a bit unfriendly. We were given menus and the drinks (water and wine) and our order taken promptly in spite of the tables rapidly filling up. The anti-pasti 'taster' which we shared was sufficient for two, and offered great variety. We particularly liked the pike croquettes which we commented on. The owner promptly gave us a smile and a wink and said would we like some more and a small bowl with 4 more arrived - gratis- delivered by a somewhat harrassed waiter. We now live in Italy and have adopted the leisurely approach to dining so, having had a big meal the night before (on my wife's birthday) we requested that they leave a menu and we would decide after our anti-pasti what we would have.
We ordered more food- the persico alla Brace (again 1 to share and contorni and which again we did not have to wait long for) noting that many fellow diners were locals, people arriving for the apartments and rooms, that were obviously regulars.
We expressed interest in the food and the place itself especially the trees covering the pergola. The owner was really friendly and brought an old picture of the restaurant and explained some of the history and about the two trees covering the pergola. They are clearly proud of their restaurant and rightly so. The food was fresh, well seasoned, local and very reasonably priced- water -still and frizzante-, house wine, antipasti, main, contorni, coffee, cover charge 46 euro! Considering it was fish that is very good value
To summarise -The bottom line on service is that the Brother and sister who own the restaurant are proud Italians and righly so. If you are interested in the food, (particularly the lake fish) they prepare, and the history off the restaurant they respond. If you expect subservience they wont. We liked them and their restaurant very much. We will return. Recommended.
