“Highly underated Accomodation”
Reviewed 11 December 2010

We came across on this motel when our pre-booked Lake Taupo stay turned out to be more a "Backpackers" variety and we moved on.
Location is superb with river walk and surrounded by pleasant parkland.
The present Chef produces wonderful meals. My partner was especially impressed with the creme brulee topped with a large portion of Manuka honeycomb.
The accomodation is in cabins pleasantly fitted out.
Within a few miles the road leads to the Tongariro National Park and a stunning viewpoint over Lake Taupo and the Crater Lake walk of Lake Rotopounamu.

The Bridge lodge has eveything a traveller needs, the famous Tongariro River at your door step, Tidy well presents clean rooms at very reasonable prices, plus a very welcoming bar and reataurant , real great pub food and New Zealand Cuisene. We found the staff very friendly and helpfull, will definately stay here during the Ski Season.

Turangi is now famous for its Autumn colours, make it a place to stop if you are travelling through NZ, it is exactly half way between Wellington and Auckland - if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of Rotorua and Taupo, the book at the Bridge, great parking if you have a camper.

Our group pretty much took over the motel--NOT hotel--and thus "curry night" was canceled. Basic small rooms with thin walls, rough and worn sheets. A fan was provided to cool the air and keep out mosquitoes if one felt the need to open doors or windows for fresh air. They did provide a can of raid and some sort of plug in the wall device as well. The device worked, though others in our group were not as fortunate. Food was ok, though as one of the vegetarians in the group I received excellent ratatouille one night and spanikopita the next--much to the envy of the others. The motel provided a picnic lunch for the group and as one member said, "whatever we paid for this, it was too much." Unripe fruit, boloney sandwiches, veggie sandwich was shredded carrots with tomato, and muffins were too dry or undercooked and a couple were in the "just right" category. Since I had a "just right", I wondered if the others were being picky so I tried two and had to agree with them. Turangi was more of a stopover for the group, but I would have preferred we stayed in Taupo or some other spot. And given the wonderful diversity in NZ, I felt disappointed in a blah village with just trout and a river.

This is definitely more motel than lodge, the bedrooms being standard basic motel fare. Pretty noisy being just off the main highway, and also noise from next door, as we found out with the screaming kids (despite being nearly empty they chose to put us next to a family…). Overpriced at $130. Turangi is fairly nondescript and underwhelming, so unless you have a passion for trout fishing it's probably not worth the trip. Much better choice of lodgings and restaurants in Taupo.

We (3 ppl) stayed the night during one of their apparently famous “thursday curry nights”. The curry was great however the service was rude. The lady owner hurriedly led us to our seats, only to snap several times “not there” as she pointed out reserved tables. At our table, we were told “sit there” and had 2 different menus thrown onto our table. None of the menus indicated their normal meals, and upon asking for a copy, she scoughed and threw a third menu in our general direction and walked away. Her husband seemed more polite upon bringing out our entree 45 minutes late and told us that they had larger tables to tend to. We (3 ppl) apparently were not as important as a table of 7. Several other groups of two or three dined and left during our wait.

Unfortunately not many places to stay and dine while in Turangi. Perhaps Burger King around the corner is a safer bet
