I spend 3 days at the hotel - work related. Conference rooms were good.
The hotel rooms are rather small, breakfast was very good.
Lunch and dinner was “classical” - with hot meals for both. Staff was a mix of very nice and local, some with knowledge and some with no knowledge at all.
The rate of royal castle tourists was very high.

Most travelers visit this area on one or more day trips from Copenhagen using the train. However, my wife and I had a rental car and were coming from Sweden by ferry, and were looking for a convenient and comfortable place to stay a couple of nights so that we could explore the region and its attractions using our car. Fredensborg and the Store Kro (“Grand Inn”) were perfect and we highly recommend both if you are traveling the same we did.

We stayed at the Store Kro for two nights in late August, ‘19. It has a great location very near the beautiful Fredensborg Palace and its extensive manicured grounds that have public walking paths and views of the nearby lake. Fredensborg is just a few miles from Louisiana Art Center, and only a short drive from Kronborg and Frederiksborg Castles. When the royal family is not staying at the palace, the picturesque little town can be very quiet, but it also hosts summer events like the marathon that took place while we were there.

The Store Kro is visually very appealing both inside and outside. It dates from 1724 but has been recently renovated and updated. It has a cozy and welcoming lobby and adjacent bar, with a restaurant off the one side that seems also to be used for receptions and events to the other. The breakfast buffet, which was excellent, is served in a light and air bistro that connects with the bar and that opens onto a pleasant terrace and the hotel grounds beyond. Free parking is available in front of the hotel and also in a lot across the street.

Our room (#25, a “Grand Double Main”) was huge, with dormer windows in the bedroom area and in the bathroom. It was on the third floor, reached by an elevator which was fine for hauling luggage but was so slow that it was often more convenient to walk down to the lobby. The room was attractive and comfortable, with a king bed, two night stands, a desk, and an upholstered chair with a small side table. There was a large built-in closet with shelving and hanging space. Wifi was strong and fast. The bathroom was very large with a stylish one-piece vanity and sink with plenty of room for toiletries. The shower was very nice although it drained very slowly.

All in all, the Store Kro was one of the most pleasant hotels we stayed in during our three-weeks in Scandinavia, and certainly seemed to be a very good value. We strongly recommend it if you have a car and want to spend a few days exploring this lovely part of Denmark.

We had a table at 18:15, happy to be there early to be home not too late... 2-3 tables were taken but we quickly noticed that some tables who came after us were served before us. We left the restaurant at 22:00 without even having had our dessert.
30min after our arrival, we could finally order drinks. We chose a standard menu, not “à la carte”, so should have been smooth. We waited really long between meals, and in the end, the dessert was “forgotten”...
We left as we definitely did not feel noticed at all.
When you have such high prices and a reputation of a good restaurant, the least you can do is served the right way. I know waiters have a hard work, but then hire more people to serve your clients as you should.
Won’t come back, we are disappointed...

I have spent one night in this hotel, there is not special rooms but if you are on a business trip this doesn’t matter much. The conference room where pretty bad with the accounting however. I’ll n general food and services were really good and they have a really nice park for walks really close by.
