Owner description: An extraordinary experience of sight, sound and smell awaits you at this active New Zealand marine volcano, where the always present white cloud lends a mystical touch. Travel to the Island is either by boat or helicopter and tour guides outfit you for an adventurous trek on the island where signs of volcanic activity are everywhere. Visiting White Island's active crater is a "bucket list" item for many people from around the world and most often a highlight of any trip to New Zealand.

We were booked to take the boat trip to White Island on a Wednesday on our way from Rotorua to Coromandel. We received a call the night before to advise us the weather was not good and unfortunately the trip was cancelled. We asked to be wait listed and happily received a call Thursday to advise we were to be accommodated on the Friday voyage. The team at White Island Tours kept us well informed as on the day of the trip we had a 3.5hour drive down from Coromandel. The trip out to the island was quite rough and a few of the passengers were sea sick. Would recommend taking travel calm/kwells before taking off as it takes 1.5hrs to get to the island. The team were very good assisting the unwell passengers. We had a 92yo in our party and unfortunately she was unable to leave the main boat to get in the inflatable to the island. Would recommend a level of fitness to be able to climb up a ladder off an inflatable and walk across uneven boulders. Once you disembark onto the island it's truly an amazing experience. The guides were very informative taking the group around the island explaining the islands history and volcanic activity. It was quite exhilarating knowing we were walking on an active volcano. The gas masks were very much appreciated as the smell of sulphur can be quite overwhelming. Thanks to Kelsey, Hayden, Mutta and skipper Lance we had a wonderful day.

They were sold out and made an effort to try to get us on the tour. We did end up coming back a few days later. Company does a great job communicating with you throughout the booking and super friendly. We had a few people who were sea sick on the way to the island and crew members were there to help and very knowledgeable about the island.

A really nice boat trip to this beaitiful vulcano island, you really must do this when you are there, you can only come there by boat, you are not allowed to come there on your own. But the trip was included lunch, really very nice day.

Touring the island on foot was amazing. We took a boat to the island on a beautiful sunny day. About 1 hour later we arrived and it was amazing. The volcano is "active" so a hard hat was required and a gas mask was optional. We used the mask a couple times because of the sulfur smell got pretty strong. The views are hard to put into words, they were that awesome. There is also an old sulfur factory that you can walk through the remnants. Highly, highly recommended for anyone.

Walking on a live vulcano, in a moon-like surrounding is a once in a live-time experience.
Mutch explanation from the pilot, and a nice flight.
