“Think very carefully before booking”

We would highly recommend that before deciding whether to book this accommodation you carefully consider whether you would be happy with all of the following:
 Constant noise / loud bass above the sleeping / eating area from the flat above
 A stale smell in the flat on arrival, having just walked up an unwelcoming, grimy and smelly stairwell
 Having to wash all crockery / utensils / glassware / pans before use to be sure they are clean
 Chipped mugs / tea cups
 An oven which is dirty inside
 A microwave spattered with dried-on food stuff
 Mould growing in the seal in the top of the fridge door
 Lime scale in your drinks as the kettle is scaled up
 An over-the-bath shower which doesn’t work unless you happen to have something with you to jam into the mechanism and are prepared have the cold water on full pressure
 A toilet brush and holder which have not been cleaned (use your imagination for more detail!)
 Glass surfaces and mirrors smeared, greasy and covered in hand prints / drinks rings
 Unusable bathroom cabinet as the shelves are dirty from previous occupants’ toiletries and covered in a thick layer of dust
 Dirty marks and stains on the towels and bedding provided
 Limited privacy as the sleeping / eating area has just a roller blind
 Unusable storage for clothing, etc as drawers contain a thick layer of dust and the hair of previous occupants, and the wardrobe is crammed with additional bedding
 Several lights within the flat not working
 Having to go out of your way to collect keys from Kemp Town (which is located on the other side of Brighton to the flat) or pay a £30 fee to receive them in Hove
This could be lovely self-catering holiday accommodation as it is located close to the beach and within walking distance of local shops and central Brighton. Our experience was that it is not; it had been poorly maintained by the Landlord and had not been kept clean by the managing agents. The descriptions on both Trip Advisor and City Pad (the holiday company we booked through), and the accompanying photos, are misleading. It is, for example, not on the second floor but the third and there are several items listed and shown in the photos which are not provided at the flat.
You’ll have seen that the main issue we had was lack of cleanliness, this was in spite of bookings being inclusive of a non-negotiable cleaning charge. The property agents did offer to send a cleaner in on the day of our arrival when we first reported that the flat was dirty however, at that point we had only noticed superficial grime. We reported this purely to cover ourselves and were happy to deal with it in order to avoid wasting part of our holiday waiting in for a cleaner to arrive and do the necessary cleaning. After the weekend, we called both City Pad and the property agents again having noticed a catalogue of issues which we have listed above. Neither of them responded to our calls or even acknowledged them.
Needless to say, we will not even consider booking this accommodation again. In our opinion it is overpriced for what in reality is a poorly maintained and generally grimy property and as such is not suitable for the purpose of a holiday let.

Management Response

We are extremely surprised and sorry to hear of the issues experienced during your stay. We were not aware of this as we are not CityPad, the agency that you booked with. We have however spoken with the other agency, and the owner. They assure us that they had a meeting with their housekeepers and the property has now had a thorough, deep clean and refresh, and any necessary items replaced. The noisy neighbours upstairs have moved on thankfully. We, and the owner, can confirm that the apartment is definitely located on the second floor of the building. Once again, very sorry to hear of your experience as our guests have always been satisfied with their stay at Retro Studio in the past.
Kind regards, Crown Gardens Ltd.
